Velda M. Schatz, 89, of Monticello died Thursday July 8, 2010 at her home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. Survivors include four children, Kenneth Schatz of Sioux City; Diana (Robert) Muchmore of Rowley; Stanley (Ruth) Schatz of Osage and Linda Schatz of Clarksburg, Maryland; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Ruby Toenjes and Clara Tsuris, both of Monticello. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Wilfred; three sisters: Edna Dirks, Irma Bodeker, and Luella Ulferts; two brothers: Leslie Toenjes and Irvin Toenjes; one daughter-in-law, Janice Schatz; two sisters-in-law: Pauline Toenjes and Marie Schatz and four brothers-in-law: Ernie Dirks, John Bodeker, Carl Ulferts and Peter Tsuris. Velda Marie Schatz, daughter of Arend Gerhard and Mary Zimmerman Toenjes, was born May 8, 1921, at their country home near Anamosa. Wilfred C. Schatz and Velda M. Toenjes were married Feb. 19, 1941. They farmed in Castle Grove and Wayne Township until retiring in 1980 when they moved to Monticello.
