INDEPENDENCE – Vergil A. Foster, 94 years old, of Independence, died on Wednesday, July 10, at his home. He was born on May 8, 1919, in Middlefield Township of Buchanan County, the son of Carl and Pearl (Lewis) Foster. He attended the Buchanan County country schools. On October 2, 1940, he and the former Irene Florence Williamson were married in Manchester. She preceded him in death in 1993. He and Donna Pauline Williamson were married on Dec. 21, in Independence. Mr. Foster farmed in Buchanan County and hauled milk cans for the Independence Dairy for 26 years. He also was the school bus superintendent and a school bus driver for the Independence Community Schools for 35 years. He retired in 2000.
Mr. Foster is survived by his wife, Donna, two sons, Larry (Sally) Foster of Greensburg, Ind., and Terry (Deb) Foster of Independence; two step daughters, Shelly Williamson and Penny (Donnie) Dixon, both of Bellevue; and one step son, Mike Williamson of Independence. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; six step grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; one brother, C.F. Foster of Manchester; and one sister, Donabel Williams of Iowa City.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one granddaughter in infancy.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 15, at the First Baptist Church in Independence, with Dr. David A. Larson officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
