Verla M. Payne, 77, of Independence, died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Allen Memorial Hospital following a short illness. She was born Nov. 19, 1932, in Byron Township, the daughter of Forrest Fred and Alene Maxine (Sickles) Payne. She graduated from high school in Winthrop, and then, completed her registered nurse certification at Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo. She was a registered nurse at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, Iowa, until she retired in 1994. Payne is survived by her sister, Merilyn Beebe of Independence; her daughter-in-law, Marilyn Payne of Independence; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kevin Payne; one brother, Donald Payne, and one brother-in-law, Paul Beebe. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the White Funeral Home in Independence. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Winthrop. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5th, at the funeral home.
