Verle E. Meggers (1921 - 2012)

INDEPENDENCE– Verle E. Meggers, 90, of Independence, died Friday, April 6, at his home in Independence.
Verle was born on June 2, 1921, near Rowley the son of Clarence F. and Kathryn (Murphy) Meggers. He graduated from the Independence High School, and entered the US Army on March 25, 1943, serving as a Staff Sergeant during WW II until his discharge on Oct. 23, 1945. On Nov. 6, 1943 he was united in marriage to Wanda L. Edwards in Morganfield, Kentucky. The couple returned to Independence where Verle was employed as a Buchanan County Deputy Sherriff, served as the Buchanan County Auditor for five terms, and as a patrolman with the Independence Police Department. In 1959 he was appointed Postmaster in Independence a position he held for 27 years prior to his retirement in 1985.
Verle is survived by three children; Edward Meggers, McGregor, Curtis Meggers, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Verla Kay Howery, Enid, Okla., four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two sisters; Elva Prenosil, and Pat Axline both of Independence.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Wanda in 1991, a sister; Jean Kimmerle, and two brothers; Don and Jack Meggers.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with Rev. Harry Wach officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. to Monday and from 8 a.m. till services Tuesday at the funeral home.
