QUASQUETON – Victor I. Schmitz, 71, of Quasqueton died Tuesday evening, Nov. 12 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
Victor was born on Jan. 6, 1942, in LaPorte City, the son of Henry W. and Frances E. (Kaufman) Schmitz. He was raised in the Winthrop, area and 1960 graduate of the Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. Shortly following his graduation he became employed with the Quaker Oats Company in Cedar Rapids, working in the Oat Milling Dept. for 39 years prior to his retirement in 2000. In 1963 Victor was married to Doris Lee Myers she died in 1993. On May 12, 2001 He married Patricia Ann Lewis in the Union Church, Quasqueton.
Victor loved his family especially spending time with his children and grandchildren. Umpiring many Little League games over the years, where he became known as "Pops" to many. In his younger years Victor was an accomplished bowler, and an outdoorsman enjoying fishing and bow hunting. In his retirement he became a gentleman's pool player and avid golfer, enthusiastically playing at the Winthrop Golf Course on Thursdays and at St. Andrews Golf Course in Cedar Rapids on Mondays.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Schmitz, Quasqueton; six children; Sandra (Steve) McMurrin, Otterville, Tammy Schmitz, Oelwein, Rodney Schmitz, Quasqueton, Dallas (John) Schroeder, Farley, Valerie (Jeff) Dahl, Harmony, Minn., and James (Angela) Knox, Tipton; nineteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and a brother, Loren (Lois) Schmitz, Cedar Rapids.
Victor was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Doris Lee (Myers) Schmitz in 1993; a son, Dean Schmitz; and three brothers: Kenneth, Vincent, and Bill Schmitz.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Winthrop with Rev. Kevin Jennings officiating. Burial was in the Quasqueton Cemetery, Quasqueton. Friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. till services Saturday at the funeral home.
