ANDREW – Virginia Davis Leaven Hoff, 89, of Andrew, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 23, at Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa.
Virginia was born May 5, 1922 in Boston, Mass. to Jerald Farmer and Arda Davis. She graduated from Independence high school in 1940, and graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts in Home Economics. While at Coe she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. On June 6, 1946 she married John L. Leaven in Independence. John died in 1961. After John died, she taught school in Miles, Maquoketa, Bellevue, and Andrew school districts, substituting until 2009. On June 22, 1963, she married Melvin Hoff in Maquoketa. They lived on the family farm outside of Cottonville until Melvin's death in 1999. After Melvin's death, she moved to Andrew. During her time on the farm, she was the CCD coordinator for over 10 years at Holy Rosary Parish in LaMotte. While on the farm, Virginia obtained her realtor license in 1986 and was a partner in HMH Real Estate Auctions. She ended her real estate career in 2010 with Kennedy- Gilmore Real Estate in Maquoketa. She was a member of P.E.O., Catholic Daughters of America, and attended the Catholic Church in Otter Creek.
Virginia is survived by her brother Jerald (Sue) Davis of Cedar Rapids, children John L. Leaven Jr., Jackson, Wyo., Mary Leaven (Bob) O'Neale of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Tim (Becky) Leaven of Iowa City, and Dorthe Leaven (Ian MacDonald) of Littleton, Colo. Virginia is also survived by eight grandchildren, Matt Baguss, Tony (Alyssa) Baguss, Sarah Baguss, Brenden O'Neale, Katie O'Neale, Jenna (Tyler) Miller, Nathan and Rose Leaven; four great grandchildren, Lane and Neil Baguss, Austin Fierce, and Emily Clary, and a loving extended family. Virginia was preceded in death by her husbands John and Melvin and her sister Sarah Davis.
Visitation was Friday, March 2 at Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa with a Catholic Daughter's Rosary followed by a Vigil Service. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to Andrew Fire Department/First Responders, PO Box 32, Andrew, IA 52030.
Interment will be at St. John's Cemetery, Independence at a later date.
