Wayne E. McGlaughlin (1939 - 2015)

INDEPENDENCE – Wayne E. McGlaughlin, 75, of Independence, died Saturday morning, Sept. 19, at his residence in Prairie Hills Assisted Living Center in Independence.
Wayne was born on Oct. 23, 1939 in Waterloo, the son of Lester and Ruby (Fox) McGlaughlin. He graduated with the Class of 1957 from Jesup High School, Jesup. Following his graduation he became employed with the Illinois Central Railroad and then served with the US Air Force for 4 years. Upon his discharge he returned to work with the railroad for several years. In 1963 Wayne reenlisted with the Air Force serving a total of 23 years of service to his country prior to retirement. Upon his return from the service Wayne returned to work as a Janitor with St. John's Catholic Church and School, and later with the US Postal Service in Winthrop for 20 years. He married Sharon L. Sattizahn on June 29, 1963 at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence. The family made their home in Independence.
He loved spending time with his family especially the grandchildren attending many of their activities, mushroom hunting and working. He often times volunteered to drive people to Dialysis Centers and to attend church.
He is survived by four children: Deborah (Keith) Milbach, Rowley, Theresa (Scott) Cates, Tiger, Ga., Wayne (DeeAnn) McGlaughlin, Jr, Monona, and Dennis (Carolyn) McGlaughlin, Iowa City. Thirteen Grandchildren, four brothers: Errol McGlaughlin, Arvada, Colo., Lester McGlaughlin, Independence, Don McGlaughlin, Tipton, and Mike McGlaughlin, Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters: Sheri Kriesel-Farlow, South Bend, Ind., and Lori Kriesel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sharon in 1997; and a daughter-in-law Joan McGlaughlin.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence. A Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Tuesday by the 4th degree Knights of Columbus, a Military Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and a Parish Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
