INDEPENDENCE – William (Bill) Lester West, 81 years old, of Independence, formerly of Oelwein, died on January 19, 2013, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence. He was born on August 7, 1931, in Waterloo, the son of Anna Bluebelle (Fink) and Lester William West. He graduated from high school in Frederika, with the Class of 1951. On June 27, 1954, he and the former Carol Lee Huntbach were married in Waterloo. She preceded him in death in 2007. Bill worked at Rath Packing Co. and also farmed east of Jesup. He retired in 1989.
Bill is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Rich) French of St. Charles, Ill. and Pam (Mark) Giles of Virginia Beach, Va., and one son, Kevin (Becky) West of Jesup. He was blessed with six grandchildren. Bill enjoyed a special relationship with his five siblings. He is survived by two brothers, Don West of Cedar Falls, and Larry (Marilyn) West of Waterloo, two sisters, Barbara Schoneman and June (Bob) Hansen, both of Cedar Falls, and one brother-in-law, Laurence (Merna) Johnson of Waterloo.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter in infancy, one sister, Norma Jean Johnson, one sister-in-law, Lois West, and one brother-in-law, Ron Schoneman.
Funeral services was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the White Funeral Home in Independence with Rich French officiating. Casket Bearers will be Nate French, Sarah French, Katie Valet, Ben Valet, Laura Giles, Chris West, and Amanda West. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
