WINTHROP – Winifred June Myers of Urbandale passed away at the age of 89 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, on Monday, Dec. 10, from complications of a stroke.
Winifred, the daughter of Elmer and Esther (Nelson) Peterson, was born in Harcourt on June 1, 1923. She attended Lanyon Consolidated School and graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She was employed with Army Intelligence in Des Moines prior to marriage.
She was united in marriage to Orville (Jeff) Myers on June 2, 1946, at Union Park Methodist Church in Des Moines. To this union four children were born; Judith, Steven, Kenneth, and Sonja. The family lived in the Iowa communities of Walker, Rowley, and Winthrop. Winnie was employed as a secretary for the East Buchanan Community School District in Winthrop. After their retirement, Jeff and Winnie moved to Lake Panorama at Panora in 1989. In 2004, they relocated to Urbandale.
Winnie enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, bowling, fishing, playing golf, playing cards, traveling and many spectator sports. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was an active member of Church of Christ United in Winthrop, First Presbyterian Church in Guthrie Center, and Knox Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Jeff; son, Kenneth; granddaughter, Shannon Behan; son-in-law, Dean Raether; and brother-in-law, Eugene Thompson.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy (Bill) Elliott, Walcott; son, Steve (Nancy) Myers, Urbandale; daughter, Sonja (John) Behan, Independence; six grandchildren, Scott (Grace) Raether, Pam Thorne, Andy (Stephanie) Myers, Jackie Myers, Carrie Lehs, and Julie (Zach) Osborne; step-grandson, Robert (Sheri) Elliott; seven great-grandchildren, Christian Raether, Ashley Thorne, Alissa Thorne, McKenna Lehs, Jacob Lehs, Tyler Osborne, and Kylie Osborne; and sisters, Joyce (Bill) Huntrods and Bonnie Thompson.
Visitation will be held at Fawcett's Funeral Home, Winthrop, on Thursday, Dec. 13 from 4 to 7 p.m.. Funeral Services will be held at Church of Christ United in Winthrop at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Winthrop.
