INDEPENDENCE– Gary L. Bird, 66, of Independence died Tuesday evening, Dec. 4, at the Cedar Valley Hospice House in Waterloo following complications from ALS.

Gary was born on Feb. 13, 1946, in Independence, the son of Gilbert R. and Marian (Williamson) Bird. He was raised in Waterloo graduating from West High School in 1964. He was employed with Kings Food Host prior to entering the U.S. Army on Jan. 4, 1966, serving during the Vietnam Conflict till his discharge on Dec. 4, 1967. He returned to the Waterloo, and was united into marriage on Dec. 28, 1968 to Carolyn J. McCampbell in St. Timothy's Methodist Church in Cedar Falls. He became employed with Wicks Lumber Company for a couple of years prior to becoming employed with the John Deere Company in Waterloo for 33 years prior to his retirement in 2007. The family moved to Independence in 2006.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn J. Bird, Independence, three children; Randy (Krista) Bird, Lake in the Hills, Ill., Angie Buss, Waterloo, and Erik (Julie) Bird, Bloomsdale, Mo., eleven grandchildren, his father Gilbert Bird, Waterloo, and two sisters; Jacque (Gary) Hauser, Tama, and Karen (Al Hintz) Towlerton, Denver, and his mother-in-law Bonnie McCampbell, Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his mother Marian Bird, and father-in-law C. H. McCampbell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Independence, with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Friends called for visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence where a military memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Friday.
