INDEPENDENCE– Samuel "Sam" M. Miller, 74, of Independence, Iowa died Friday morning, Sept. 6, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

Sam was born on Nov. 18, 1938, in Wooster, Ohio, the son of Mose D. and Susan E. (Hochstetler) Miller. He served his country as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, serving from Jan. 6, 1959 thru Dec. 12, 1962. On Sept. 2, 1967 he was married to Betty L. Bennett in Oelwein. The couple made their home in Independence where Sam drove truck for Jensen Transport since 1983.
He is survived by his wife; Betty Miller, Independence; four children: Angela (Jim) Miller Roth, Independence, Marjorie (Linc) Kroeger, Cincinnati, Ohio, Melissa (Pierre) Otto, Dyersville, David Miller, Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren; and two sisters: Emma Caldwell, Phoenix, AZ, and Ada Bontrager, Granton, Wisc.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Eli and David Miller.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. Paul McManus officiating. Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence, with graveside military services. Visitation was 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence. A Parish Wake Service was held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
