MECHANICSBURG – Richard G. "Dick" Colwell, age 73, of Mechanicsburg passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, in Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana. He was born on March 12, 1941, in Irwin, Ohio, the son of Charles "Harry" Colwell and Goldie Marie (Tisdale) Colwell. He grew up in the London and Woodstock areas, where he was a farmhand. He was employed at Drackett, International Harvester and retired from Siemens in Bellefontaine. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Dick knew him as a loving family man and devoted friend. He was always involved in the community as a football booster, softball coach and gun club adviser. He loved anything to do with the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and gardening. His greatest joy of all was spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of New Life Ministries Church in Mechanicsburg.
He is survived by daughters Cheryl (David) Ryan of Cable and Dixie (Scot) Dallas of Urbana, grandchildren Morgan Taylor Ryan, Mason Richard Ryan and Ryann Elizabeth Dallas, sister Violet Kitchen and brothers, Jack (Linda) Colwell and Robert (Lois) Colwell, brothers and sisters-in-law Norma Jean Harrington, Richard (Helen) Blakeman, Robert Moore, Grace Blakeman, Ralph Jones, Patty Colwell, special companion Eugene Harrington and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife and soul-mate Joanna (Blakeman) Colwell, his parents, a son, Richard Colwell Jr., sisters Hazel Giordaino and Elsie Jones, brothers Jim, Junior, Donald Colwell, sisters-in-law, Ruth Ann Moore, Mary Colwell, brothers-in-law, Marvin Kitchen, Norman Harrington and Junior Blakeman.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014, from 12-2 at the New Life Ministry Church, 11160 Rosedale Road in Mechanicsburg, where the funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dale Fitch officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mechanicsburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mechanicsburg Fire and EMS, 18 N. Main Street, Mechanicsburg, Ohio 43044.
