Dechant, Mary Louise (Fick) - Kit Carson  
Mary Louise Fick Dechant was born on Aug. 28, 1923 in Hays, Kan. to Theo Fick and Agnes McLaren Fick. She lived in various locations around Kit Carson and Arena and that is where her love of animals grew. She loved to ride horses, bottle lambs and calves, and care for numerous dogs and cats from Buster to Boots and Lucky. The family bought and moved to the Pop Clauson place where she lived for the rest of her life. Mary Louise had a love of music that stayed with her throughout her lifetime. Cowboy Band, National Music contests on the baritone, vocals through college, and teaching. Music carried her from high school to college to employment in Sharon Springs, Kan. where high school girls introduced her to a local boy and on Valentine's Day, Mary Louise and Joe Dechant became engaged. They married on June 4, 1947. To this union was born 9 children, sons Joeseph, John, Ed, Pat, Paul, Jim, Dan, and Chris, and one daughter Mary Jo. Mary Louise had a very strong love of faith and was a member of the St. Augustine Altar and Rosary Society. Family was her life and she loved being together on holidays. There were loud games of pitch and cribbage. Easter and Christmas were her favorites, when she enjoyed big meals and a house full of love. She retired from teaching after a long career in numerous schools from Lamar, her first, to Kit Carson, her last. Joe died in 1994 and she stayed on the ranch in Arena to continue the ranching and farming she had always loved, until her death on Wednesday, June 10, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, son Chris, sister Dorothy Cox, brother George Fick, and her parents. She leaves to mourn her daughter, Mary Jo Dechant-Fletcher (Loren), Joseph (Pearl), John (Lydia), Ed (Mary), Pat (Lannie), Paul (Eleanor), Jim, Dan (Joy), and Diana Middleshwartz, as well as her 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grand-children. A funeral Mass of Resurrection was held on Monday, June 15, 2015 at the St. Augustine Church in Kit Carson with Fr. Garcia as the celebrant. Burial followed in the Kit Carson Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers were: Bill Kent, Pat Ward, Toby Johnson, Mike Crawford, Curt Connelley and Jim Trahern. Memorial contributions can be made to the Charles Kirk Foundation for Music or the Kit Carson Wind Ensemble.
