BRO. "FRANCIS" GEORGE F. HUYER - SARASOTA, Fla. - Bro. "Francis" George F. Huyer, S.S.E., 92, died on June 16, 2013. Brother Huyer, son of Bert and Christine (Freund) Huyer, was born on Dec. 5, 1921, in Chicago, Ill. He was a professed member of the Society of Saint Edmund for 58 years. Bro. Huyer graduated from Metropolitan Business College in 1941. The following year he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two years in the European Theater of Operations. He received a Purple Heart as a result of being wounded in England. In late 1945, Bro. Francis was honorably discharged and returned to Chicago. The following nine years, he worked for private firms and the U.S. Post Office. In 1954, Bro. Francis entered the Society of St. Edmund and professed his first vows on Aug. 22, 1954. His journey as Brother Francis began at the St. Michael's College library followed by an assignment at St. Edmund's Novitiate in Enders Island, Conn., where he helped with the renovation of buildings being prepared to serve as a new novitiate. He also assisted in vocation work. From 1958-1966, he served in Selma, Ala., at the Edmundite Missions Office and was procurator and treasurer at the Edmundite Missions House. In 1966, Bro. Francis was transferred to St. Edmund's Seminary in Burlington, serving as procurator, bookkeeper, treasurer and infirmarian followed by a year in the Treasurer's office at St. Michael's College. His next assignment, from 1971-1978, was at the Edmundite Seminary Guild in Mystic, Conn., as office manager of fund raising. Bro. Francis returned to Vermont, serving in various assignments at the Edmundite Generalate, parishes, St. Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte and as assistant to the regional superior of the Edmundites. He retired in 1991, spending time with his family in Chicago until 1993 when he moved to Florida and joined his brother Edmundites. Besides his brothers in religion, Brother Francis is survived by his brother, Joseph Huyer. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, John and Bertram Huyer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Edmundite Chapel, 1401 Broad St., Selma, Ala. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Selma, Ala. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013, at the Edmundite Chapel, 621 Harvard St., Englewood, Fla. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Edmundite Southern Missions, 1428 Broad St., Selma, AL 36701.
