JANET (WASHBURN) PAIGE - VERGENNES - Janet (Washburn) Paige, 77, of Vergennes, formerly of St. Johnsbury, passed away peacefully Jan. 23, 2015, in Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans with her children by her side, following a 10 year struggle with Alzheimer's. Janet was born Aug. 19, 1937, in Randolph, the only child of John Washburn and Cornelia Bass. Janet's mother, Cornelia, died of Tuberculosis when Janet was age six; she was then raised by her father and stepmother, Ila Dana Washburn. Janet married Ronald Paige, of practically everywhere in Vermont, May 1959, and they settled in St. Johnsbury. After graduating from Burlington Business College (later to be known as Champlain College) in 1956, Janet held many important office and office manager positions, including the Law Office of Governor Phil Hoff, Fairbanks Scales, and the Law Office of John Swainbank; eventually reaching Paralegal status. She was well known for serving 20 years as the Registrar of the Probate Court for Caledonia County, as well as serving many years, in nearly every possible position for a layperson, at North Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury. In 2008, when Janet was no longer able to live alone in her home, she moved to Vergennes and lived with her daughter, Patti, who cared for her up until her recent hospitalization just before the first of the year. Janet was predeceased by her mother; father; stepmother; husband; two aunts; and three uncles. Janet is survived by her daughter, Patti Paige of 5 Sunset Dr., Vergennes; son, Michael Paige and wife, Shellie, of 41 Mountain View Blvd., South Burlington; two granddaughters, Chelsea Paige of Iron Mountain, Mich., and Jenna Paige of Essex Junction; aunt, Linda Bradshaw of Williston; many cousins; and sisters-in-law, Leota Sumner of Burlington, Beverly Lewis of Stem, N.C., and Madine Bitcon of Woodland Park, Colo. The family wishes to extend their deep gratitude for the care and compassion that Janet received from the staff at Project Independence, the adult daycare facility operated by Elderly Services in Middlebury. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at 1 p.m., at Vergennes Congregational Church. Online condolences may be made through www.gregorycremation.com . MAUREEN PELKEY - WINOOSKI/ST. ALBANS - The world lost a beautiful soul today when the Lord came looking for an angel. Maureen (Tew) Pelkey, born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 30 1945, passed away peacefully the morning of Jan. 21, 2015, surrounded by the love of her family. Maureen was predeceased by her loving husband of 34 years, Frank E. Pelky III. They were longtime residents of Winooski. She is survived by her son, Frank E. Pelkey IV and wife, Carolyn Pelkey; and grandchildren and great-granddaughter, Veronica Mattison and husband, Edward Mattison Jr., and their daughter, Chloe Mattison, Steven Pelkey, Lucia Pelkey, Elizabeth Pelkey, Frank Pelkey V. She is also survived by her family, Kenneth Tew, Arlene Stathakis, Lorraine Ashby, Deloris and Buck Ashby, Sharron and Lenord Bassuk, and Shirley and Richard Cruger. Maureen was also predeceased by her parents, Harry Tew Sr. and Ruth Tew, of Long Island, N.Y.; sisters and brothers, Jaqueline Reynolds, Rose Riley, Joanne Tew, Edward Tew, Harry Tew Jr., Pat Tew, and Danny Tew; and in-laws, Frank Pelkey Jr. and Lucia Pelkey of Essex/Colchester. Maureen kept a spot in her heart for many, many nieces and nephews; and all her sisters- and brothers-in-law whom she loved and cared for very much. She also saved a special spot in her heart for her great-niece, Victoria Bassuk; and had a special relationship with her friend, Stacy Gaudette. Maureen was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Harry and Ruth Tew Jr., on Aug. 30 1945, she lived on the island with her family until she met the love of her life, Frank Pelkey III, and were married on June 27, 1964, and gave birth to a son, Frank Pelkey IV, 1966. Marriage brought Maureen to Vermont and the Pelkey family whom she loved deeply. Maureen made a career and some great friends for herself at UVM. She was there for 30-plus years, rising up through the ranks to become the Asst. Director of Physical Plant. After retirement, she made it her job to spread her love to everyone she knew. Her favorite hobby was her grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her big heart, and generosity, her sense of humor, her love for cooking and a good family party. Her love had no bounds and her door was open to everyone. She was everyone's Grandma, she truly enriched every life she touched. Though the Lord has found it fit to come and take her home, we know she lives on in our hearts, and in our stories and memories. She will forever be looking down and watching over us. We also know she is finally home with the love of her life, Frank Pelkey III. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winooski. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, at the LaVigne Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.lavignefuneralhome.com .
