FREDERICK J. DIRMAIER - ESSEX JUNCTION - Frederick J. Dirmaier, 87, of Essex Junction, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2013, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born in Altenschwand, Germany, on Feb. 28, 1926, and immigrated to America when he was a small boy. He grew up in New Britain, Conn., and graduated from New Britain High School in June 1944. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during W.W.II, in Europe, with the 705th Tank Destroyer Battalion attached to the 11th Armored Division. He attended St. Michael's College, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in German from Colorado College in 1950. He earned a Master's of Education Degree from Harvard University
in 1956. His career as an educator spanned over 40 years. He taught German and English at St. Michael's College and was a Guidance Counselor and Head of Guidance at Essex High School, until retirement in 1988. Fred was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, who loved to travel. He is survived by his wife, Colette; and six children, Greg Dirmaier and wife, Suzanne, of Waterbury; Ann Iadanza and husband, Joe, of Hinesburg; John Dirmaier and wife, Bobbi, of South Burlington; Laure Reynolds and husband, Mark, of San Diego, Calif.; Betsy Baird and husband, Steve, of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and Jim Dirmaier and wife, Kathleen, of Essex. Fred was very proud of his 11 grandchildren, Derick, Kristen, Kimberly, Scott, Bryan, Katie, Lisa, Matthew, Peter, Kurt, and Nikki. Visiting hours will be on Monday, March 25, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ready Funeral and Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., in Burlington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Essex Junction.
