JAMES MATTHEW CLEARY

JAMES MATTHEW CLEARY - FAIRFAX - James M. Cleary, 81, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife of 53 years, Judith (Soule) Cleary, and his loving family, on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012. He was born Oct. 28, 1931, in Syracuse, N.Y., son of John T. and Anna (O'Brien) Cleary. Jim served the State of Vermont in various capacities, first with Department of Forest and Parks, then with the Agency of Transportation and Highway and retired as a Vermont ADAD Counselor. He was also a member of the Vermont State Employee Association. Jim and Judy owned and operated "Cleary's Clutter" Antique Shop for 13 years. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Copley Country Club in Morrisville, Champlain County Club in St. Albans, and the Enosburg Country Club. He enjoyed shooting and was part of the "Just For Fun" shooting group in Fletcher, and the Underhill Rod and Gun Club, and was a member of S.A.S.S. and the "Dalton Gang," where he was known as "Cloverleaf Jim." Jim was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corp, serving his country in the Korean Conflict, where he became a recipient of the Purple Heart. His tank was the last one out of the Chosin Reservoir. He was a member of Mt. Mansfield Post 35 American Legion, where he served as Sergeant at Arms. He enjoyed his walk with Dr. Bob and Bill W. for 48 years and encouraged and sponsored many others on the same path. Jim enjoyed golfing, woodworking and collecting John Deere toy tractors. For many years, he served as a lay reader for the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont. Jim met his wife Judy at Lake Luzerne Dude Ranch and they eloped on July 4, 1959. He is survived by his children and their families, Kathleen "Kate" Lennen and husband, Joel, and their children, J.P., Dillon, Kerry and Molly, of Mars, Pa.; Jill Cleary Mackey of Addison and her children, Hunter and his fiancée, Samantha Estesse, of Lowell, J.J., Nico and Montana Mackey, of Addison; Thomas Cleary and wife, Kimberly, and their daughters, Devin and Abigail, of Pembroke, N.H.; and Ted Cleary and his daughter, Katie, of Sheldon. He is also survived by his former son-in-law, Ric Mackey of Middlebury; former daughter-in-law, Stephanie Cleary of Sheldon; nieces and nephews, Jesse Soule, David Garlock, Rick Cleary, Mary Chris Cleary, Ann Cleary Myers, and Pamela Garlock Dellow. He was predeceased by his parents; siblings, John T. Cleary Jr., Richard E. Cleary, and Ellen Garlock; in-laws, Horace W. and Charlotte Soule; and brother-in-law, Peter D. Soule. Visiting hours will be held Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.
