JANET FIRTH COLTER SHELBURNE - Longtime Wake Robin resident, writer, illustrator, editor, environmentalist, gardener, skier, wife, mother, great grand- mother (not necessarily in that order), passed away March 9, 2014. She was born in New Jersey, graduated from Smith College, worked for Vogue Magazine, and settled in Madison, N.J. There she raised, with her husband and best friend, a family of three children and innumerable dogs, rabbits, birds, mice and plants. She spent many years tutoring young children in English as a Second Language, and many years with the NJ League of Women Voters working for a better environment. She helped edit several published literary works, including "Sounder" by William Armstrong, which earned the Newbury Award and was later made into a successful motion picture. Many years ago, she and her husband moved to Vermont to start a new life. They lived aside a Bromley Mountain slope, and ran Vermont Ski Reservations, Inc. They skied all the mountains of Vermont, which led to authoring a book "Favorite Vermont Ski Inns and Lodging Guide," published by McGraw Hill. Having developed and left a spectacular wildflower garden at Bromley, Janet moved north to Wake Robin and did it all over again, planting and tending another extensive garden off the patio behind her home in the community. That passion led to "Flowers are Fun," published while living at Wake Robin. There she initiated "News from Wake Robin," a monthly column in the "Shelburne News." However, Janet's principal contribution was to author a dozen stage plays, directed by a friend, which were invariably S.R.O., and engaged the enthusiastic participation of a majority of Wake Robin residents. Surviving are husband, Rudyard, Wake Robin resident; children, Carter (Conn.), Carolee (BC, Canada), and Christopher (Colo.); plus grand- children and great-grandchildren in the Rockies and California. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Janet's name to Vermont Public Radio, 1-800-6396391, or by check to: Vermont Public Radio, 365 Troy Ave., Colchester, VT 05446. Arrangements are in the care of the Ready Funeral and Cremation Service, Burlington.
