JEANETTE (BATTEN) TILLOTSON

JEANETTE (BATTEN) TILLOTSON - WAITS RIVER - Jeanette Batten Tillotson, 91, a longtime resident of Waits River, died on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, in the Blue Spruce Home in Bradford. Born on Oct. 18, 1922, in Waits River, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Anabel (Chalmers) Batten. She and her four siblings were raised on the family farm in Waits River and enjoyed a rich childhood experience of farm and country life. She attended the Waits River Elementary School, Bradford Academy, Class of 1941, and Lyndon Normal School, Class of 1944. Prior to her marriage, Jeanette taught elementary school in Norwich. On July 19, 1944, she married Raymond A. Tillotson of West Topsham in Barre. When Raymond returned from military service in 1945, they started their life together. The couple first made their home in West Topsham before moving to Waits River in 1949. As a girl, she studied piano with Katrina Munn of Bradford. Jeanette loved playing the piano and singing songs from the 1940s. Occasionally, she would break into a tap dance in the kitchen to the delight of her children. She had a keen appreciation of beauty in all its forms, a love of nature, music, reading and local and family history which she imparted to each of her children. She was a lovely, kind and gentle woman with a keen sense of humor and wonderful love for her family. We will miss her so much. She is survived by her children, Doris Tillotson of Essex, and her dear friend, Janet Munt, of Shelburne; Stephen and wife, Linda Salomaa Tillotson, of East Corinth; and Rachel Tillotson and companion, Charles Schaufus, of Waits River; four grandchildren and their families, Sara Hunter of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and her children, Cassandra Bedell, Heather and Hunter Starbeck; Angela Knapp of Essex, and children, Justin and Micaela Clapp; Allison and husband, Noel Hawke, of Hanover, N.H., and children, Anabelle and Carter; and Lisa and husband, Kaj Samsom, of Moretown, and children, Anja and Maaika; sister-in-law, Margaret Hartley Batten of Waits River; brother, Russell and wife, Elin Johnson Batten, of West Topsham; sister, Louise Gilbert of Williston; sister-in-law, Lola Dexter Tillotson of Plymouth, N.H.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Raymond A. Tillotson; an infant sister; and brothers, Dwight Woodcock and Gardner Batten. A service of remembrance will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the New Hope United Methodist Church in Waits River, with Pastor Candace Ricker officiating.
