JOANNA LULL WILLIAMS - SHELBURNE - Joanna Lull Williams, 73, of Shelburne, passed away Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. She was born April 30, 1940, in Ticonderoga, N.Y., the daughter of the late Robert D. Lull and Catherine D. Lull. Joanna graduated from Shelburne High School in 1958, before going to the University of Vermont where she graduated with a BA in English in 1962. While at UVM, she was a member (and future advisor) of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She was also an active member of the campus, participating in the Judiciary Committee, the WSGA, and the Panhellenic Council, while also being selected for membership into the Mortar Board Honor Society. In the years following college, Joanna found one of her true passions, teaching. She started her teaching career at Lyman C. Hunt in Burlington, before moving across the city to Edmunds. After taking a break from teaching to raise her family, she went back to education in the 1980's, when she started working at South Burlington High School. From that point on, she taught at both the high school and middle school in South Burlington until her retirement in 2005. Jo was known as a teacher who cared deeply about each and every one of her students, and she truly loved teaching. She also made many lifelong friends while working in these schools, and she lovingly described them as her second family. Besides teaching, Jo loved her family. She was a devoted daughter, and later a strong and caring mother. Whether she was taking a car load of 8th graders to Big Ben's Pizza after a school dance, or carting a group to a UVM hockey game, Mother Williams was a constant figure in the lives of many growing up in the Shelburne area during the '80s. However, it was not until 2004 and 2007 that Jo met her true loves, her grandchildren, Samuel Lull Williams and Lillian Grace Williams. From the moment they met it was clear that Sam and Lily had a number one fan, their Nana. Jo loved her time with her grandkids dearly; from reading on the couch, to going out for smoothies, those were undoubtedly some of the happiest moments of her life. They are all very lucky to have had this wonderful time together. Joanna is survived by her son, Stanton Lull Williams of Shelburne and his wife, Naomi L. Williams, and their children, Samuel Lull Williams and Lillian Grace Williams; her sister, Helen Mary Danyow of Ferrisburgh; along with four nieces and nephews, Robert Danyow of Charlotte, Catherine Dieman of New Haven, Rebecca Weldon of Burlington, and Megan Bridges of South Burlington. Joanna also leaves her ex-husband, Stanton Williams of Naples, Fla.; his sister, Rebecca Mascott of Naples, Fla., and her daughters, Kimberly Zieselman of New York, N.Y., and Tara Johnson of Acton, Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Shelburne. Interment in the Shelburne Village Cemetery will follow, along with a reception at the St. Catherine's Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Robert and Catherine Lull Scholarship at South Burlington High School. Checks can be mailed to Stan Williams, 225 Fox Run Road, Shelburne, VT 05482.
