MADELINE G. GEBBIE - GREENSBORO - Madeline Ruth Greaves Gebbie, 93, a longtime Greensboro resident, died on June 8, 2013, in the Copley Hospital in Morrisville. She was born Nov. 13, 1919, in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of the late Clifton and Dorris (Barrows) Greaves. She graduated from Peoples Academy in Morrisville as valedictorian of the class of 1937. She continued her education at the University of Vermont graduating in the class of 1941, also as valedictorian, with a BS. degree in Agriculture. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and was chosen to join Omicron NU, the National Home Economics Society in her senior year. On June 28, 1944, she married Donald McLellan Gebbie in Morrisville and in 1952 they purchased the Gebbie Dairy Farm which they owned and operated for more than 28 years. Madeline was a teacher at Peoples Academy in Morrisville and later at Greensboro High School. She was a connoisseur of the English Language. She was a very active member of the Greensboro community. She was given the Governor's Award for Outstanding Community Service in 1991 and the Greensboro Award in 1992 for seventy years of service. Survivors include three children, Patricia Mercier, Peter Gebbie and his wife, Sandra, all of Greensboro, and Susan Locke and her husband, Wilbur, of East Albany; a daughter-in-law, Aileen Gebbie of Greensboro; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Ingalls of Hyde Park, and Mary Jane McCuin of Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Betty Spring of Massachusetts and Esther Greaves of Morrisville. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald; and a son, Donald M. Gebbie II. Visiting hours will be held on Saturday evening, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, 2013, at the Greensboro United Church of Christ.
