NORMA JEAN HAUKE

NORMA JEAN HAUKE - BURLINGTON - Norma Jean (Roberts) Hauke, 92, of Burlington, Vt., and Lantana, Fla., passed away on July 17, 2013. A fighter until the end, she recently made the very difficult trip from Florida to Vermont so that she could spend her last days surrounded by her family. Norma was born in Winooski on April 25, 1921, to the late Cread and Georgianna (Winterbottom) Roberts. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1939. It was at BHS that she met the love of her life, Roland John Hauke. The high school sweethearts were married on Sept. 1, 1940, by Bishop Vedder Van Dyke at his home at Rock Point. The couple spent the next 56 years together as best friends, supporting and loving each other and their family. Norma took great pride in being a wife, mother, aunt and friend. She could always be counted on to provide a meal, give a ride, or volunteer her time. While Roland and his brother, William, founded and ran Hauke Building Supply, Norma managed the homefront – and it was no easy task! Her home was one that was full of children, friends, family members and animals. Norma loved it all. In 1976, Norma and Roland moved to Florida. The couple quickly became involved in their community and made wonderful, lifelong friends. They continued to summer in Vermont on Colchester Point, their vacation haven since 1944. Norma loved camp and spent countless hours cooking for her family, watching her grandchildren swim and warning the kids to "stop building that tree house – it's too high!" Norma will be remembered for her strength, generosity and big hugs. Her marriage was her greatest joy and epitomized love and devotion. Roland's death was devastating to Norma, but, as was her style, she handled it with grace and determination. Norma created a new life for herself and was very proud of her independence. Her family, friends and faith – as well as Florida Marlins and New York Giants games – uplifted her. In addition, Norma's relationship with her granddaughter, Susan, and her great-granddaughter, Jessica O'Neill, provided her with much joy. Norma is survived by her three children and their spouses, Jean and Terry O'Neill of Fairfax, Susan and Bill Mason of Colchester, and Naples, Fla., and Roland Jr. and Paula Hauke of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; eight grandchildren, T. Shawn, Roland and Mark O'Neill, Susan O'Neill Parent, Chip, Chris and Amy Mason, and Lisa Hauke Marra; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Norma also leaves behind her nephews, William Hauke Jr., and Michael and John Roberts; nieces, Lillian Hauke Venner, and Margaret Hauke Lanzetta; many spouses of family members; grandnieces and grandnephews; and cousin, Lorraine Pecor. Norma also leaves behind many special friends at Donnelly Place in Lantana. In addition to her husband and parents, Norma was predeceased by her grandson, Matthew Hauke; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Pauline Roberts; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Ellinor Hauke. The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 19, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Colchester. Arrangements are in the care of Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 71 So. Union St., Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495. The family wishes to thank the Respite House and their nursing staff for their care of Norma during her last days.
