ROBERT R. CLAVELLE - BURLINGTON - Robert R. "Bob" Clavelle died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2013, in Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington. He died peacefully, with family at his side, shortly after saying loving goodbyes. He was 90. Bob was born on Oct. 15, 1922, in Winooski, the son of the late Alfred and Rena (Provost) Clavelle. He attended St. Louis Convent elementary school and graduated from Cathedral High School (1940), where he was known by his classmates as "Frenchie." He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945. Bob completed 30 bombing missions as a waist gunner on a B-24 Liberator. He was awarded the Air Medal along with three oakleaf clusters. His group (the 445th) also received the distinguished Flying Cross. On April 7, 1945, he married Jeannette Bergeron in St. Francis Xavier Church. Bob's uncle, the late Rev. Raymond Provost, performed the wedding ceremony. They were married for 64 wonderful years. In 1948, Bob and his brother, Ray, opened Clavelle Bros. IGA store in Winooski. The store had a well-known reputation for the top quality meats they sold. They operated the business until July 1959 and remained the most caring and closest of friends. Bob worked for Swift & Co. Meats from 1959 to 1964, at which time he joined Burlington Grocery as meat director serving IGA stores throughout Vermont. With the exception of three years at Independent Beef, Bob spent the rest of his career as a food counselor for IGA stores in Vermont and parts of New Hampshire and New York. Bob was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the VFW in Winooski for over 50 years. He served on the Winooski City Council from 1963-64, and was a lifelong active member of the St. Francis Xavier Parish community. Bob was an avid sports fan throughout his life, with a special devotion to the Irish of Notre Dame and the Detroit Tigers. Upon his retirement, he spent countless hours every summer attending to his garden and took great pleasure in sharing his vegetables and flowers with children and friends. He was predeceased by Jeannette, his wife of 64 years, in 2010. He is survived by his six children and their spouses, Suzanne and David Lapointe of Waterbury, Paul and Carla Clavelle of Columbia, Md., David and JoAnne Clavelle of Boise, Idaho, Richard Clavelle of South Royalton, Thomas Clavelle and Wendy Saville of Shelburne, and Robert Clavelle of South Royalton; 16 grandchildren and spouses, David and Jennifer, Aaron and Johari, Abby, Brian and Shaina, Jeffrey, Lauren, Ryan, Michael, Shawn, Robin and Ryan, Tyler, Katherine, Amy, Stephanie, Elizabeth, and Hannah; seven great-grandchildren, Will, Mia, Addy, Isaac, Charlotte, Nora, Matthew, and McKenzie; his only brother, Raymond and his wife, Eleanor, of Winooski; and many beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
