SHEILA REISS - SHELBURNE - Sheila Reiss died peacefully in the early hours of Sept. 20, 2013, at the Arbors in Shelburne where she was much loved by all who cared for her. An accomplished artist all of her adult life, Sheila passed as a beautiful harvest moon lit the night sky, a scene that reminded us all of her many full moon paintings given to family and friends. She was born on Sept. 2, 1936, in Sheboygan, Wis., the daughter of Rudy and Helen (Nehrlich) Finst. She was a summa cum laude graduate of Saint Michael's College, where her husband, John Reiss, was a longtime professor of English. She was a much beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher, as well as a highly respected painter of landscapes and still lifes, exhibited in many Vermont galleries, including the Mary Bryant, the Round Barn at Waitsfield, and the Southern Vermont Gallery. She was predeceased by the love of her life, John Reiss, on Sept. 23, 2008, and is survived by seven devoted children and their families, Joan and Steven Wry of Underhill (Heather, Rachel, and Erin); Virginia Reiss and Phil Woolever of Dusseldorf, Germany (Valentine); Connie and Will Esmay of Underhill (Sylvia and Ava); Christina Reiss and Kevin Hastings of Essex (Mia, Lily, and Tess); John Peter Reiss IV of Essex; James Reiss of Naperville, Ill. (Kendall and Kyle); and Katherine and Paul Brunelle of Sarasota, Fla. (Jay and Max). She is also survived by three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Mary Klauck of Rapid City, S.D., and Ruth Kosednar, Catherine McDonagh, and Peter Reiss of Scottsdale, Ariz.; as well as many nieces, nephews and loyal friends. The family would like to express deepest gratitude for the love and kindness of the staff at the Arbors, all of whom helped to make her final days so precious for us all.
