VIRGINIA L. YANDOW

VIRGINIA L. YANDOW - WINOOSKI - Virginia L. Yandow, 61, of Winooski, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2013, in Fletcher Allen Health Care after a courageous battle with cancer. Ginny was born on June 21, 1951, in Fort Lee, Va., to George H. Sr. and Geraldine (Shover) Yandow. Following graduation from Essex Junction High School in 1969, Ginny attended Johnson State College, earning an elementary education degree in 1973, and a Master's of Education in 1997. Teaching was not just a job for Ginny, it was a calling. For 34 years she was an elementary school teacher in the Milton School District, and for the last several years prior to her death, Ginny was on the faculty at St. Francis Xavier School in Winooski. She loved helping children open their minds to the wonders of the world and learning, often drawing on her vast knowledge of Vermont and Native American history and culture. Ginny loved traveling and made multiple trips to Alaska, including living on the Alaskan Island of Kodiak and teaching in St. Mary's Parochial School from 1985-86. Her special interests included hiking, photography, reading, family genealogy research and Native American history. Predeceased by her mother in 1998, and her father in 2004, Ginny is survived by her brother, George Jr. and his wife, Sherry; and brother, Greg and his wife, Cathy, all of Williston. She was known as Gigi to her nieces and nephews, Tyler and his wife, Erin, of Roanoke, Va., Sally Rallo and her husband, Jim, of Burlington, and Shannon and MacKenzie Yandow of Williston; her twin great-nephews, Mason and Logan Yandow, also of Roanoke, Va., held a special place in her heart. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends who supported her throughout her illness. The family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses and staff at Fletcher Allen Health Care for their care and compassion, especially the nurses on McClure 6. Special thanks to Dr. Gamal Eltabbakh and his staff who treated Ginny since her diagnosis over 10 years ago. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., Winooski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winooski. A private graveside service will be held in the spring, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, Ginny requested that family and friends make donations in her name to a student scholarship at St. Francis Xavier School, 5 St. Peter St., Winooski, VT 05405.
