WELDON E. BARRETTE - SWANTON - Weldon E. Barrette died on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, in the Franklin County Rehab Center, surrounded by his family. He was born in Swanton on Dec. 10, 1920, the son of the late Elias J. and Matilda M. (Bourgeois) Barrette and stepmother, Dolores (Trombley) Barrette. Weldon graduated from St. Anne's Academy, where he later went on to coach the St. Anne's Girls basketball team for many years. Weldon also graduated from Burlington Business College and then went on to serve his country with pride in the United States Army during World War II, where he attained the rank of Sergeant. Weldon became the owner of E.J. Barrette & Sons, Inc., Ford dealership in Swanton, which his father started in 1922. He then passed it onto his son, where it is still being run by family. The dealership has the distinction of being the longest Vermont member of Ford Motor Credit Company and the third oldest Ford dealership in Vermont. His business was one of his proudest accomplishments. He was also very proud of his association with Ford and received many prestigious awards over his lifetime, including multiple President's Awards. Weldon was involved in many organizations throughout his years. He was a charter member of the Swanton VFW, and also member of the Elks and American Legion. He was a past member of the Swanton Fire Department, MVU School Board, Chamber of Commerce, and was also a previous Town Auditor for Swanton. Weldon is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Anita (Prouty). He is also survived by his children, Jon and wife, Linda Barrette, Paula and husband, Patrick Howrigan and Diane Barrette and partner, Bruce LaGallais. He had seven grandchildren, Sara Bigelow, Meredith Henry, Aaron Barrette, Shane, Patrick and Kevin Howrigan and Jennifer Bouchard; as well as five great-grandchildren, Bella Bigelow, Regan Howrigan, Chloe and Emmett Bouchard and Edie Henry, all of whom loved him dearly; and a sister, Gloria Earley. Weldon also leaves good neighbors, Geoff and Jeannine Domey and Adam and Judy Paxman. Weldon was predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Drayton, Clayton and Lawrence Barrette. We want to thank his long-term caregivers, Debbie, Bonnie, Jennifer and Tammy, for his home care. Also, a thank you to Franklin County Rehab for the kindness from their caregivers. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Father Emmanuel I. Ajanma will be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal will take place later at the Barrette family lot in Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery.
