Pierrette Roy Obituary

Pierrette Marguerite Delaforgue Roy

Age: 93 • Winooski

Flower arranger, artist, journalist, and poet, Pierrette Marguerite Delaforgue Roy passed peacefully in her sleep on May 17, 2017. She was 93, and a resident of Our Lady of Providence home in Winooski. She leaves a sister, Jacqueline Delaforgue of Scotia, NY and three sons and their wives: Anton Marc and Christine Sarkisian of Cambridge, MA; Leo Roy and Perry Russell of Milton, MA; and Rob and Amy Roy of New York, NY; four granddaughters: Emily, Lydia, Marcella, and Genevieve; and one great-grandson: Julian. She also leaves many friends and Roy Family nieces and nephews who helped her in so many ways. Pierrette was predeceased by husbands Edward Teter and Leo Roy, and two sons: Thomas and John Roy.

Pierrette was born on December 10, 1923 in Schenectady, NY and graduated from Nott Terrace High School. She worked on the assembly line at the General Electric plant in Schenectady during World War II, and at GE in Burlington after she moved to Vermont in 1952. She and her husband Leo owned Sunny Hollow Restaurant until 1963, the site of many dinner dates, weddings, and banquets. She cared for two boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Tommy who lived to age 15, and John, who lived to age 24.

Pierrette loved flowers and flower arranging from the time she was 2, when she picked her first lilacs. She worked as a florist at three flower shops, and regularly attended Art in Bloom at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, taking Master Classes with world famous designers. She was an active member of the Burlington Garden Club, and arranged flowers for their luncheons, as well as events for the Flynn Theater, Shelburne Museum, and St. Michael's College Playhouse. She was an ardent fan of St. Michael's Playhouse, having attended opening nights for over 60 years.

She worked as a freelance journalist and drama critic, writing for the Burlington Free Press, the Catholic Tribune, and the Winooski Booster. Artistic and multi-talented, she was a dancer, beginning lessons at age 3, and dancing with the Schenectady Light Opera Company Corps de Ballet. She was a window decorator, making displays for department stores, dress shops, and banks. An oil painter herself, she was a member of the Northern Vermont Artists in the 1950's and served as Superintendent of the Art Exhibit at the Champlain Valley Exposition for thirteen years.

Pierrette was an elected member of the Colchester Fire District No. 1's Prudential Committee and Water Commission from 1983 to 1993, and served as District Clerk for nine years and Chair for four years. She was Office Manager for the Society of St. Edmund at St. Michael's College from 1984 to 1991.

Suffering a stroke in 2012, Pierrette lost most use of her left arm. She called it her "lucky stroke" because it inspired her to begin writing poetry, and she published her first book of poems three years later. Pierrette had friends of all ages and from all walks of life, whom she saw and communicated with regularly. She was always cheerful and enthusiastic. She will be greatly missed.

A Funeral Mass and Celebration of Pierrette's Life will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at St. Michael's College Chapel. Pierrette never liked the idea of donations "in lieu of flowers", because she loved flowers and wanted to support flower shops everywhere. In her memory, please send flowers to someone you love.

We had the pleasure of meeting Pierrette , Jackie and Margaret in North Hero at our antique shop. It was a pleasure to get to know her. What a dear sweet lady. She always brought us a bag of books and ALWAYS sent a thank you note after her purchases at the shop. It was a treat to visit her at her book signing. What an accomplished woman! We are so sorry for everyone's loss with the passing of Pierrette. It sounds like she touched a great many lives. Our sympathy, love and prayers to Jackie and Margaret and the whole family. So happy that our paths crossed. We will be thinking of you tomorrow and keep you close in our hearts.

I knew Pierette when I lived in Winooski many years ago. I lost contact with her when we moved to Williston but reconnected with her when she moved to Williston and I worked at Rite Aid. How I wish I had known that she and her husband owned Sunny Hollow restsurant! We ate there so often! My father often told the story of when he stopped there after a long day of work and after eating discovered he had no cash on him (before credit cards)! Pierette told him not to worry.....she knew she could trust him! Rest in peace dear lady. You are missed.

I just received this very sad news from Leo by mail. I met Pierrette when I ran the floral Dept at her local Shaw's Supermarket . Being from England Pierrette would chat with me about our floral shows in England and her love of flowers and art .
I went to her apartment once and she always had a zest for life and entertaining others in some way or another.
She passed 2 days before my birthday.
93 years young . I knew she had arthritis pain in her hands and she would tell me how she had bee sting treatments that she found to help her pain and joint stiffness .
She was just always smiling and upbeat any time I got to see her. Always busy getting ready to do a craft event in her complex or a floral arrangement and things for church. We lost a wonderful lady and friend .
Rest In Peace my friend my life was richer for having known you ❤
God Bless Barb Jarvis Tennessee USA

Last Tuesday was a very sad day for our family. We lost a very dear and special lady, Pierrette. Roy, and our lives will never be quite the same. She truly was a member of our family and shared in our joys,, our celebrations and our losses. She was always there in good times and bad. An adopted mother to me, and a mentor. We knew each other for almost 60 years!! She and I shared a love of all things beautiful ..... flowers and flower arranging, decorating and interior design, the theater, black & white clothing, photography, beautiful paintings, our favorite restaurants; Leunigs and, of course, Chef's Corner, writing,
classic movies and good books. the beach towns of southern Maine, and travel, particularly in Europe and, of course Paris and Provence! And I didn't even touch on our love of politics and this country we live in! We shared our love of being both mothers and proud grandmothers. There is now a void that cannot be filled. She will always be in my heart forever. Until we meet again.....I know you hold a special place in heaven. ❤

Pierette had been writing poems lately. On one visit with her, I persuaded her to submit a poem to the Onion River Review at St. Michael's College. She did submit and one of her poems was published in the latest issue. I took her to the release party. She was thrilled and she gave a memorable account of how it had served as therapy for her after a stroke. I was proud to number her and her son, John, as dear friends. God will love her company in heaven.
