OLGA FYLES Obituary

OLGA MARY FYLES SHELBURNE - Olga Mary Fyles, age 92, of Shelburne, died on Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born in Barre on Jan. 26, 1918, the daughter of Battista and Delfina (Paini) Ribi of Pogono, Italy. She was educated in Barre and Bethel schools. She was married on Dec. 1, 1944 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Francis "Sandy" Fyles. He predeceased her on Jan. 12, 1996. Aunt Olga, as she was known to her family, was a kind and giving person. She welcomed all who came into her home, stranger and friend alike, making sure they were well fed, and had a good laugh. Many family members boarded with her and Uncle Sandy for extended periods while in the Burlington area for school or work. Aunt Olga worked hard to ensure they were successful in their endeavors. She was a devoted and loving wife to Sandy. This was never more apparent than when he was restricted to his bed in the final seven years of his life. Aunt Olga gave to her community until the day she passed. She was a member of the Shelburne Woman's Auxiliary for many years. She laundered and starched the weekly alter linens religiously for over 45 years. When this duty was taken over by others, she enjoyed helping fold the weekly bulletins every Friday. Aunt Olga volunteered her time with helping to prepare meals at the Salvation Army in Burlington. She was nicknamed the "Onion Lady" because onions would not affect her eyes as she diced them. She loved being with her friends and helping to prepare the meals. Aunt Olga loved to bake. Often she would show her appreciation to others by presenting them with pies, cookies, banana bread, or other goodies. Her car mechanic, hairdresser, medical staff and the post office were often the recipients of these treats. Aunt Olga took great pride in keeping her home beautiful, inside and out. Many people complimented her on her well-tended and colorful flower gardens. The liveliness that characterized Aunt Olga was never more apparent than when she would be seen shoveling her driveway in the middle of the night, or mowing her lawn well into her eighties. Aunt Olga's hobbies included knitting and crossstitching. She never missed her game shows, Jeopardy, Price is Right, and Wheel of Fortune. She loved doing puzzles with Laura and her friends. Laura and Aunt Olga had many enjoyable times together, shopping, cooking, playing cards, and other games. She was employed by the Shelburne Country Store before retiring and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Olga is survived by an adopted son, Roy; and two granddaughters in New Hampshire; a sister-in-law in Randolph; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Shelburne on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Spring in Shelburne Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shelburne Fire Department and Rescue Squad, PO Box 254, Shelburne, VT 05482. Arrangements are in the care of the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. To send online condolences please visit www.readyfuneral.com

One of my favorite memories of Aunt Olga had to do with dropping her car off at the dealership for maintenance. This was shortly before her giving up driving. She asked that I follow her up to leave the car at the dealer ship and bring her home. I hadn't seen her drive much at that time. She timed her exit from her driveway onto route 7 perfectly. You don't get much of a window in the traffic when crossing both lanes, but she timed it perfectly. She zoomed up to the speed limit right on the dot, not a mile over or a mile under, until we approached the first traffic light which was turning yellow. Then she stepped on it. This happened for 2 consecutive lights. Aunt Olga wasn't going to allow the traffic light to slow her pace down. We miss you Aunt Olga.
