DON HALL GROUT, Ed. D. - MESA, Ariz./COLCHESTER - Don Hall Grout, 84, a former resident of Colchester, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014, in Banner Garden Hospice, in Mesa, Ariz., following complications from pancreatic cancer. Don was born in Alexandria, Egypt, on Dec. 21, 1929, the son of Don Jackson and Thelma (Hall) Grout. A lifelong educator and engineer, Don received his Ed. D from Vanderbilt University, M. Ed from UVM and BS from Norwich University. Don retired from Champlain College as a full professor, previously taught at the Randolph Vo-Tech and was a math and AV teacher at West Rutland High School. Prior to his teaching career, Don was a quality control engineer with General Electric. Don served his country during the Korean conflict in the Air Force, and was a licensed private pilot. He was a lifetime member and secretary of the Sun Life Armature Radio club and of AARL - call sign W1DR. Lifetime memberships also included Mensa, The American Legion, and the Elks Club. Don loved to camp and travel, and he enjoyed square dancing and cooking. He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Patricia (Ready); sister, Barbara and Al Stiles; son, Scott; son, Douglas and Ginger Grout; daughter, Deborah and Chuck Harrison; daughter, Linda and Douglas Cleveland; cousin, George Kennedy of Texas; and grandchildren, Meghan, Elizabeth, Jenny, Kate Emily, Luke, Rachel, Tyler, and Molly. Don was predeceased by his wife of 41 years in 1998, Audrey (Barrett). A funeral service will be celebrated in the chapel of Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Junction, at 12 noon, on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.
