ARLAND "ARNIE" ATKINS - FERRISBURGH - Arland "Arnie" Atkins, 71, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at his home in Vergennes after a brief battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 28, 1943, the son of John and Mildred (DeCoursey) Atkins. He owned and operated a dairy farm in Ferrisburgh for 21 years. His hobbies were bailing hay, riding around on the roads of Addison County, and he enjoyed going to a tractor pull. He was always there to lend a helping hand. Arland is survived by three children, John and Sue Atkins, Candie and Dudley Leavitt, and Carleen Atkins and Bruce; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and three brothers, Edmund, Hubert and Rollin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014, at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. Friends may call at funeral home on Monday from 1 p.m. up to the hour of the funeral. Interment will be in Gage Cemetery in Ferrisburgh in the spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, PO Box 11, Vergennes, VT 05491; or Addison County Home Health & Hospice, PO Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.
