BERNARD P. "PETE" MURPHY - ROCK ISLAND, Ill. / BURLINGTON - Bernard P. "Pete" Murphy, 92, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 24, 2012, in the Heartland Nursing Home. Bernard was born in Burlington on Nov. 30, 1919, the fourth child of Patrick H. and Mary (Shanley) Murphy. He grew up in Burlington and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1938. During W.W.II, Bernard was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Forces in the North African Campaign, with the 57th Fighter Group - 66th Fighter Squadron, The Exterminators. After the war, Bernard attended UVM and graduated in 1951, with a degree in civil engineering. Bernard married his soul mate, Mary C. Forville, on Sept. 7, 1949. Bernard worked for the U.S. government as a Fire Inspector Engineer for Government Installations throughout the U.S. and at the Rock Island Arsenal, until his retirement. Bernard is survived by his daughter, Ann M. (Bill) Shafer of Rock Island, Ill.; nieces and nephews, Joyce F. Wu, Carole (Jim) Lupo, Mary (Chuck) Thompson, Nancy B. Murphy, Lance Ravlin, Kaydell Murphy, Alison (Cris) DaBica, Bridget (James) Kathary, Jarrod (Niki) Thompson, and Kienan Murphy. Bernard was predeceased by his wife, Mary in 2002; sisters, brothers, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, Josephine Doris Murphy, Lt. John Gregory Murphy, Mary M. (Vernon) Forville, and William F. (Katherine T.) Murphy. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rock Island, Ill., on June 29, 2012. Burial was at the Rock Island National Cemetery, with full military honors. Our Uncle Bernard was a true gentleman and will be deeply missed.
