BETTY B. PRESTON - RICHMOND - Betty Preston, 85, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Betty was born in Richmond, the daughter of Cleland and Loantha (Miller) Barney. She married Richard W. Preston from Milton on Dec. 4, 1949. She was a friend to many in the town. She grew up on her parent's farm, and went to Richmond High School. Betty worked many jobs here in town and surrounding areas. Betty was the person many went to for knowledge of the history of Richmond. She loved talking with anyone who would stop by to visit; didn't matter what it was about, but normally ended up about things that happened over the years in town. She loved the land that was once the Barney Farm. The falls behind the barn were a special place she loved to go, and sit and think. She worked hard to get most of the farm into the State Legacy program to conserve the land. Betty is survived by her son, William, and daughter-in-law, Deborah, of Richmond; two grandsons, Travis and his wife, Pam, of Jericho, and Darcy and his girlfriend, Cindy, of Richmond; and four great-grandchildren, Joseph, Nathan, Louanntha, and Darcy Jr. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard; her parents; and her sisters, Loantha and Jane. Visiting hours will be Friday, April 25, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Gifford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 26, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Richmond Congregational Church, Richmond. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Richmond Historical Society, P.O. Box 453, Richmond, VT 05477.
