DAVID LEO SULLIVAN SR. - UNDERHILL - David Leo Sullivan Sr. died peacefully at his home in Underhill on May 30, 2012. David was born on Feb. 28, 1937, to Leo and Helen (Pease) Sullivan. In 1948, at age 11, he joined Boy Scout Troop 1 and formed many lifelong friendships. He continued with the troop for many years, serving as an assistant troop leader until 1965. As a young boy he spent many hours playing on the streets on Burlington. He enjoyed tobogganing down the hills with his friends, but he especially loved jack jumping. He was a champion jack jumper rider, and taught many older kids how to ride. Later he built jack jumpers for his children and taught them to love it too. David graduated from Burlington High School in 1956. He served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1962. He was stationed on the USS Rhodes from 1956 to 1958. He enjoyed attending The World's Fair in Brussels during that time. He graduated from the Maine Vo-Tech auto technician program in 1961. He served as class president, and formed many longtime friendships while in Maine. David married Ruth McLane on Aug. 27, 1960. They eventually moved to Underhill and, in 1964, purchased a farm in Underhill from her parents. They raised their children on this farm and were proud to have one of the few remaining working farms in town. In 1961, he began working for S. T. Griswold Company. He worked for many years as the shop foreman and retired in August 2000. He then worked as a consultant for them until July 2002. David joined the Underhill Jericho Fire Department in 1966. He served 1st Assistant Chief from 1972 to 1983. He shared his wealth of knowledge on many truck and building committees. He was a Life Time Member and was actively serving in his 46th year at the time of his death. On March 3, 1976, David took over from Crick Walker, as Underhill Forest Fire Warden. After 35 years he retired from that position on April 11, 2011, handing the job to Parker Ripley. David was very skilled with tools. Not only could he fix various trucks, automobiles and farm equipment, but he was a builder. He built several barns, and kept the old farmhouse repaired. He built several pieces of horse drawn equipment, whipple trees and shaves. After retiring, he got a sawmill and cut the wood and helped his brother-in-law build a camp. He insisted on precision. He taught many people how to read a ruler, how to tie knots and the importance of using the right tool for the job. Camping was something David enjoyed with his children. They often went camping across the river and cooked their meals over a campfire. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed many fly fishing trips with his brothers-inlaw and other friends. David loved to eat. He did not like mushrooms, watermelon or cucumbers. He liked meat, seafood, bread and anything chocolate. He could out eat about anyone. He always claimed he had only been full twice in his life, and both times Ruthie had done the cooking. David was predeceased by his son, Jasimer on March 2, 1990; and by his wife, Ruth on Sept. 10, 2009. He is survived by his children, son, David and wife, Monica, of Bedford, Mass.; daughter, Suzanna and husband, Jim Brown, of Georgia, Vt.; daughter, Caroline and partner, Nancy Sicard, of Buxton, Maine; daughter, Winifred of Underhill; and son, Nate of Underhill; and two granddaughters, Shelby and Logan Sullivan of Bedford, Mass.
