DEREK SCHUELER Obituary
DEREK SCHUELER - BURLINGTON - Derek Schueler, 21, died in a tragic swimming accident early Sunday morning, Aug. 18, 2013. He was born Jan. 6, 1992, in Burlington, and was a lifelong area resident, attending Burlington schools and graduating with the Class of 2010 from Burlington High School, where he was captain of the hockey team and played varsity hockey and lacrosse all four years. Derek was about to enter his senior year at the University of Vermont as a business major, member of the Investment Club, and with an internship at Dealer.com. He was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, student, and friend who will be forever loved and remembered for his ceaseless positive spirit, sparkling eyes, and ever ready smile. Derek was also an active member of Sigma Phi Society where he was treasurer, as well as a "big brother" to Chris Milizia. He was active in community service from a young age, having volunteered for the Vermont City Marathon for many years, and recently enjoyed a connection to the Community Sailing Center, occasionally helping with their events. As a part of his legacy, Derek leaves his non- judgmental nature and his unconditional kindness toward others, as well as the gift of several organs, including his extraordinary eyes so that another may see the world as he did, brimming with love, hope, and happiness. Derek is survived by his mother, Vivien Allan and her partner, Jack Wallace, of Shelburne; father, Kurt Schueler of Burlington; sister, Alexandra Schueler and fiance, Daniel Vitalis; maternal grandparents, Helen and Derek Allan; paternal grandmother, Mary-Sue Getman; uncles, Gary Allan, Drew Allan, and Steve Schueler; aunts, Lora Allan, Kristine Schueler, Cody Schueler, and Diana Monsalve/ Allan; cousins, Heather Garayoa, Cameron Allan, and Ketchum Schueler. A celebration of Derek's life will be held at Ira Allen Chapel on the campus of the University of Vermont on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at 4 p.m. Arrangements are in care of Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 71 S. Union St., Burlington. In lieu of flowers, and to honor Derek's exemplary life and his love for Lake Champlain, donations are being made to The Derek Schueler Fund at the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center, PO Box 64818, Burlington, VT 05406, www.communitysailingcenter.org.
