DIANE WAYMAN Obituary

DIANE D. WAYMAN - BERLIN, Md. - Diane D. Wayman, 69, of Berlin, Md., died Nov. 27, 2013, in the Vermont Respite House with her partner and daughter by her side, five weeks after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Diane was born in Reno, Nev., to a pioneering family of journalists and public servants. Her grandfather, Denver S. Dickerson, was Governor of Nevada. Her father, Denver Dickerson, was the youngest Speaker of the Nevada Assembly, and was appointed Superintendent of Guam by President Kennedy. As the daughter of foreign service officers, Diane spent her childhood in Burma and Hong Kong where she learned to play golf, which would become a lifelong avocation. She received a BS in Chemistry from Roanoke College in 1966. After brief employment at the NIH, Diane began her career as a professional photographer, spanning more than 30 years photographing children, families, weddings, and cultural and political events in Washington, DC. In 1970, she married Stanley E. Wayman, a prominent LIFE magazine photojournalist, and became mother to his two children before giving birth to their daughter. Stan Wayman died in 1973. Continuing her progressive family's legacy, she was active in Democratic Party politics in Washington, DC, and was elected an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner and was appointed a DC Commissioner on Aging by the mayor. She was also active in feminist, civil rights, and peace organizations, taking her young daughter to protests from an early age and instilling in her children the importance of social justice. Diane's passion for golf remained with her from her early days in Burma and Hong Kong, and she became a mentor and informal coach to many less skilled and inexperienced golfers. She won numerous tournaments and club championships, the last one only six weeks before being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Diane was known for her sense of humor, her pithy writing resulting in multiple letters-to-the-editor being published, her immense generosity, and her love of family. She was a vibrant presence in so many different communities and she was always the life of the party. She will be profoundly missed by those who knew her. She is survived by her partner of 21 years and spouse of three weeks, Kate McQueen of Maryland; son, Seth A. Wayman of Pittsburgh, Pa.; daughters, Sarah Johnson of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Katherine A. Wayman of Williston, Vt.; son-inlaw, whom she called her "touchstone," Michael Boccanfuso Wayman; granddaughter, Taylor A. Johnson of Ft. Myers, Fla.; grandsons, Jonah Michael Wayman and Sebastian Stanley Wayman of Williston, Vt.; a half brother, several cousins, and numerous friends. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers at the Respite House and Dr. Jaina Clough for honoring Diane with exquisite compassion at the end of her life. There will be a memorial service in Maryland in the spring. Donations in Diane's memory may be made to Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

Kate, Sarah, Katherine and Seth,

We are so very sad about Diane's illness and death. We recently heard about her long and heroic fight to survive. She was always such a strong person, a dear friend to so many and an amazing mother!
She was always there as a friend, neighbor, and community supporter!
Wish we could have helped her in her suffering!

Kate, we would love to be in touch and to know of her memorial service. May God comfort you all in your huge loss.

Love,

Diane was a dear neighbor and friend to me and my family in Washington, DC. She took wonderful pictures of my brother and I when we where young, I used to babysit for her children and my brother Matt and her son are good friends. Diane was funny and interesting to talk to and she made me feel that what I had to say was interesting and important too, it was one of the many wonderful things about her. The world is a smaller place with out her in it. love, Ann Potter

Diane was and is the meaning of warmth and comfort. I came to know her through her grandson's birthday parties as she sat content watching them smile and play as we chatted. Her life was her family and her legacy her family.

Our family knew Diane, Delcey, Lois and Paul during their time in Hong Kong. I knew Diane as a lovely young girl, with a great sense of humor and it is no wonder she grew up to be the beautiful accomplished person she was. I cherish my memory of her.

Fortune befell Diane and Kate when they met, and both enriched each other's lives with enduring love and constancy. As their friend, I celebrated their lives together -- and the thrill that Paris brought them. Their circle was complete with their marriage. love, Phyllis Austin

Diane came into our lives as the young bride of our neighbor, Stan Wayman. She was a beacon to my daughters, Bitsy and Tina , always a smile and a warm welcome. Always the one we could depend on. We moved but always remember Diane on 44th street. Nancy

Diane and I were young mothers with Katherine and Kate and had many happy times together. The most wonderful pictures of my children, Kate and Rob, were taken by Diane. They will serve as a lasting memory of someone who was very dear to me.

Diane made lasting contributions to her community in Washington through Iona Senior Services. She was an early volunteer - on the phone, helping in the office, and taking photos. She became President of the Board and in that role was a steadying, wise leader. I loved my monthly morning coffees with her at home, and was very sorry when she moved out of our neighborhood. All of us working at Iona or helped through Iona were touched by Diane's guidance. For her family and closest friends, I send my deepest sympathy. I will hold her in my heart always.

I will miss Diane at Ocaen City Golf . Diane and I had a running joke about her looking like my Aunt Lukey. She was a very special person and a wonderful friend.
