DOROTHY MAE BARDEN - BURLINGTON - Dorothy (Dot) Mae Barden (St. Peter) age 89, of Burlington, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2012, in Burlington, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Colebrook N.H., on Dec. 17, 1922, the daughter of Albert and Gladys (Naylor) St. Peter. She was married to Howard Barden on Oct. 17, 1941, in Littleton, N.H. She was a graduate of Littleton High School and also attended school in her native Colebrook, N.H., where she was member of their basketball team. She moved with her family to Burlington in the early 1950s, the home she loved the most. She was a New North Ender living on Vest Haven Drive, Saratoga Avenue and Eastman Farm Road. Dot spent her life as a dedicated homemaker and mother. Home was her refuge and outside of her family and friends, her greatest source of comfort, pride and joy. She was an avid Bridge player and played regularly for decades with friends and groups across the city. She loved to garden and her home was always filled with blooming flowers and plants. She was a passionate New York Yankees fan and a dedicated New Englander who rarely traveled outside Vermont and couldn't understand why anyone would want to. Dot was known for her enthusiastic and candid opinions on a wide range of topics. Despite being a traditionalist, she was an independent thinker and could always be counted on for spirited discussions punctuated by conclusions impossible to challenge with logic. For example, upon the advent of the Feminist Revolution she observed, "Why would I want to be equal to men when we've been superior for so long". She is survived by two sons, Robert and his wife, Barbara Barden, and Timothy and his wife, Jennifer Barden. She was the proud grandmother of Eric and his wife, Susan Barden, Michelle and her husband, Adam Pitts, Christopher, Cameron Barden and his partner, Marissa DeRose, Zachary and Jonathan. Dot was blessed with two great- grandchildren, Elijah and Chloe. She is also survived by her brother, Stephen and his wife, Donna St. Peter; and brother-in-law, Edward Raby and his wife, Neet. Dot was predeceased by her sister, Ada Raby; brothers-in-law, Donald and Reginald Barden; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Campbell, Daisy and Evelyn; and beloved husband of 56 years, Howard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Mark's Catholic Church in Burlington on Friday, June 15, 2012, at 10 a.m., followed by a gathering for friends and family at StudioThree in South Burlington. Burial will be held privately for family in new Mt. Calvary Cemetery. At the request of Dorothy, there will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are in the care of the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service, Burlington. To send online condolences to the family please visit www.readyfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Dorothy Barden to the National Shingles Foundation, 603 West 115th Street, Suite 371, New York, N.Y. 10025-7722.
