EVERETT BAILEY Obituary

EVERETT CLARK BAILEY - SOUTH BURLINGTON - Everett Clark Bailey died on May 23, 2014, at the age of 96. He was born on Dec. 3, 1917, the son of Leslie Bailey and Bessie (Clark) Bailey. He was raised in Wells River and Burlington, graduating from Burlington High School and the University of Vermont, where he was co-captain of the ski team. During World War II, he served in the 10th Mountain Division in Washington, Colorado, Texas, Kiska Island in the Aleutians, and in northern Italy. In Italy he was a Company Commander, and was awarded a Silver Star and a Bronze Star for valor in combat. After the war he also served in the US Army Reserves, including as Commandant of the 1035th USAR School, retiring as a full Colonel. He returned to Burlington after the war, where he initially sold life insurance, then worked for Fritz Wiessner selling ski wax and paint. In 1950, he began his 30-year tenure with the E.B. & A.C. Whiting Company, from which he retired as President in 1981. He started as salesman and, subsequently, as Vice President, was instrumental in shepherding the plastic filaments branch into the most profitable manufacturing center, then as President directed the construction of a new plastics manufacturing facility. His leadership was invaluable in the Whiting Company's growth and success. During his working life he also was active in, and greatly enjoyed, St. Paul's Episcopal Church (now St. Paul's Cathedral) and the Burlington Country Club. He also served on numerous boards including the Union Mutual Life Insurance Company and the Vermont Industrial Development Authority. Over his life he had many hobbies, including fly fishing and fly tying, skiing (4 events), hiking, flying, watercolor painting, and golf (especially golf). He read extensively his whole life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Doris Doerfler Bailey; sons, Tom and wife, Linda, of South Burlington, and Clark currently of Utah; daughter, Anny Cain and husband, David, of Jamestown, R.I.; as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Ruth Bailey Otis; brother, Jacob Joshua Bailey; and oldest son, David, in 1994. When asked the secret of his success, he responded, "I was just lucky." He applied himself with energy and intelligence to everything he did, and had a life well-lived. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 71 South Union St., Burlington. A memorial service for Everett will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at St. Paul's Cathedral, 2 Cherry St., Burlington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Chittenden County, 142 Kindness Court, South Burlington, VT 05403.

I am planning to send a personal note if I can find your address. If not I want you to remember all the fun times we had at Ray Keyser's camp and how you continued to get me in trouble. Unfortunately Jack passed away and I haven't seen you for some time, But I enjoyed every minute of knowing you and Ev (what a sweetie he was).

I remember fondly the time that you and you family lived in Williston. David and Tom were in elementary school with me and believe it was David who convinced me that he could eat worms!! (and collect snakes and other little critters!) My sympathy to all of you.

Doris & Family: I was saddened to read of Everett's passing.I remember many conversations with him at your home at the "after concert" socials with the SB Community Chorus. I also remember your service to SB when you served on some of our committees at the Recreation Dept.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to hear of the passing of a great man. Everett gets a lot of credit for helping to get Vermont Engine Service off the ground in the 80's with his incredible business sense. Thoughts and prayers are with Doris and the family with love from Rat and Sandy
