HARRIET HAND - BURLINGTON - Harriet passed away peacefully on the morning of Dec. 1, 2013, surrounded by family and friends. Harriet was loved by many and lived a rich and rewarding life. The daughter of Samuel and Dora Ashkenazy, Harriet was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 27, 1933. She spent her early years in the Bronx and in 1951 graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, with honors, in one of the first classes to admit women. She attended Hunter College (Class of 1954) and received a Masters of Food and Nutrition from Syracuse University (1957), where she met Samuel B. Hand. They married in New York City in 1957 and were together for 55 happy years, until Sam's death in 2012. Harriet and Sam moved to Burlington in 1961, when Sam joined the faculty of the University of Vermont's History Department. They raised their three daughters in Burlington and were honored to call Vermont home. Harriet was generous with her time and a tireless supporter and volunteer to causes she believed in, most importantly the League of Women's Voters and the Ohavi Zedek Synagogue. Her style was quiet and unassuming and she never expected anything in return as long as she deemed the project worthwhile. A gracious host and a devoted friend, above all Harriet cherished her family. Harriet is survived by her three children, Sally Hand of Burlington, Marci Raab (David) of Rye, N.Y., and Ilana Hand of Alexandria, Va.; sister, Joan Gibbons (Solomon) of Mount Kisco N.Y.; brother-in-law, Marvin Albin of Cambridge, Mass.; two grandchildren, Nathan and Elizabeth Raab of Rye, N.Y.; and eight nieces and nephews. The family has asked that contributions in Harriet's memory be made to the Ohavi Zedek Synagogue, 188 North Prospect St., Burlington, VT 05401; or the Sara Holbrook Community Center, 66 North Ave., Burlington, VT 05401. Services will be held at Ohavi Zedek Synagogue at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, with interment to follow in Hebrew Holy Society Cemetery, Patchen Road, South Burlington. Arrangements are by Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Directors.
