JANICE MARILYN KNOWLES - SOUTH BURLINGTON - Janice Marilyn Knowles, of South Burlington, passed away June 28, 2013, in Pasadena, Fla. Janice was born in St. Johnsbury in 1924. Her father, Robert R. Wakefield, was the owner of Northern Cadillac, and her mother, Addie, gave poetry and literary readings in Peacham and St. Johnsbury. The family belonged to the South Congregational Church. After graduating from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1942, Janice trained as a RN at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Mass. She met and married her husband, James Morris Knowles, a Merchant Marine and later college instructor, and they had many happy adventures together up and down the East Coast before he died in 1969. Janice had a productive and interesting career as a nurse, which included teaching nursing students Ob-Gyn for Fanny Allen Hospital in the 1970's. Janice had a great appreciation for the outdoors, especially Joe's Pond, and for all creatures great and small. She will be missed and treasured forever by a wide circle of friends of all ages. Janice is survived by her daughter, Chryss Jane Knowles, and son-in-law, Michael L. Rustad, of South Burlington. Janice helped raise her grandchildren, Dr. James Knowles Rustad of Safety Harbor, Fla., and Erica Rustad Ferreira, Esq. of Arlington, Va. Her sister-in-law and brother-in-law are Elsie and Carl Anderson of Lyndon. Janice also celebrated her new family members that came with Erica's marriage to Nelson Ferreira. A memorial service will be held in Danville later in the summer.
