JOAN SHANGRAW - BURLINGTON - Joan E. Shangraw, 82, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, May 12, 2013, in Birchwood Nursing Home in Burlington, following a long illness. She was born Feb. 8, 1931, in Burlington, the daughter of J. George DeGraff and Isabelle J. (Yandow) DeGraff. She married Everett W. Shangraw Sr. on Nov. 6, 1948, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in South Burlington, and together they raised five children while living in Williston. She was a long time GE employee, and later a Grumman Aerospace employee with NASA certification in soldering and inspection. She was the most boisterous and avid Red Sox fan and could often be seen on Church Street in her later years handing out pins for Bernie Sanders in her Red Sox gear. She is survived by her former husband, Everett; their children, Everett Jr. and his wife, Nelsy, Marjorie Bowin and her husband, Jerry, Linda Salmon and her husband, Michael, George J. Shangraw and his wife, Karen, and Robert Shangraw and his wife, Linda. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Everett Perrotte, Karen Shangraw Simmons, Tiffany Shangraw Wall, Eric Shangraw, Rebecca Ploof, Bradley Ploof, Stacey Ploof, Amanda Ploof Lavallee, Melissa Salmon Perry, Shannon Shangraw Bryant, Jay Shangraw, Jon, Neil and Melissa Marion, Stephanie Shangraw; and 22 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her close friends from the McKenzie House in Burlington, Bert, Betty, and Victor. She was predeceased by her father in July 1968 and her mother in Feb. 1990. Visiting hours will be held at the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., Winooski, on Friday, May 17, 2013, from 12 to 2 p.m., with a Memorial Service immediately following at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Resurrection Park Cemetery on Hinesburg Road in South Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joan's name to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Greater New England Chapter, 75 Talcott Rd., Williston, VT 05495 (
