LANA ROSE SZCZERBAK - SOUTH BURLINGTON - Lana Rose Szczerbak died on Feb. 17, 2014, after a long battle with cancer, at home, with her husband, Robert, at her side. She was born in Passaic, N.J., on Dec. 18, 1943, the oldest daughter of Phyllis M. Hudson and Charles F. Hudson. She graduated from Passaic High School in 1961, and then attended Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. In her senior year of high school, she met Robert Szczerbak, went with him to the Senior Prom and married him in 1964. After they were married, Robert started a 40-year career with IBM and Lana settled down as a full-time mother and homemaker. They raised three sons, Paul, Mark and David. After living in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Reston, Va., she moved with her family to South Burlington in 1979. She took a part-time job as an activities director at the Terraces in Shelburne, and did volunteer work at Fanny Allen Hospital as well as church organizations. Lana was very talented artistically and used her skills to fill her home with artwork and crafts. She also used these skills on her job and volunteer projects. She was predeceased by her father, Charles. She is survived by her mother, Phyllis; husband, Robert; sons, Paul Szczerbak of South Burlington and his daughters, Brandi and Janine; Mark Szczerbak of Morrisonville, N.Y., and his wife, Lori, and their children, Matthew and Nicholas; and David Szczerbak of Shelburne, and his wife, Christine, and son, Derrick. She is also survived by her sister, Renea Mayeski of Nanticoke, Pa., and her husband, John, and their daughters, Cheryl and Robyn, and their children. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. in Christ the King Roman Catholic Church with burial to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ready Funeral and Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington.
