MELVIN HERBERT "HERB" SMALL, DDS - CHARLOTTE - Herb Small, 93, a longtime resident of Charlotte, died peacefully on May 6, 2013, in Englewood, Fla. Herb was born in Burlington on Sept. 6, 1919, the son of Herbert Bates Small, DDS and Lulu Shepard Small, RN. Herb graduated from Edmunds High School in 1937, and was a member of the University of Vermont, Class of '41. Upon graduating from McGill University with his dental degree, Herb followed in his father's footsteps, joining him in his dental practice. After several years in practice, Herb enlisted in the Army Air Forces (USAAF). He practiced dentistry stateside during the war at the rank of Captain and was discharged from active duty in 1949. He returned to Burlington to work side-by-side with his father at their dental practice on Church Street. Following the death of his father, Herb moved the practice to the corner of College and South Union Streets, where he remained until his retirement. He was a past president of the Vermont State Dental Society. Herb was dedicated to his wife, Nan Small, and their two sons, Gary and Jeff. He rarely missed one of their soccer, basketball or tennis matches. He enjoyed working with young children, and ran a youth bowling league for many years. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, bowler, hunter, gardener and tennis player. He was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors and friends and enjoyed a lifetime of activities near his family's original home in Huntington and his summer home on Lake Champlain at Cedar Beach. Herb was still riding his bicycle multiple times a day during his stay in Florida this past winter. Herb was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Norma Ann Nelson Small, "Nan," a dental hygienist, in 2011. He is survived by his son, Gary H. Small and his wife, Karin, of Charlotte; son, Jeffrey C. Small and partner, Elizabeth Robbins, of Charlotte and South Burlington; grandchildren, Alexandra of Jericho, Matthew of Burlington, Meghan of Providence, R.I., Justin of Burlington, and Charlotte of Summit, N.J.; sister-in-law, Abigail McIntosh of South Burlington, brother-in-law, Burton Tabakin, MD of Shelburne; nieces, Jill F. Smith of Duxbury, and Nancy Small of Summit, N.J. Herb was recently predeceased by his sister, Beatrice Tabakin; and brother-in-law, Frank McIntosh. The family is grateful for all the support provided by so many family members and close friends over the last few years during Herb and Nan's final years with us. Herb's large extended family will celebrate his long and joyous life at a private gathering at Cedar Beach over Memorial Day weekend. We will remember him as we plant and meticulously maintain our gardens, hit a tennis ball, or simply go to the dentist. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 29 Mansfield Ave., Burlington, VT 05401.
