NORMAN CASE Obituary

NORMAN S. CASE JR. - BETHEL - Norman S. Case Jr., 97, of Bethel, died Saturday evening, Nov. 15, 2014, in the Vermont Respite House in Williston. He was born July 8, 1917, in Bethel, the son of Norman S. and Emma (Arnold) Case, where he lived his first two years in his mother's home. When his father returned from France, serving in W.W.I, he took his family to his home in Rhode Island. Norman attended Providence, R.I., schools, the Perkins Institute for the Blind, and graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Brown University. He went on to graduate with honors from Yale University, clerked for Asa Bloomer in Rutland, Vt., and was admitted to practice law before the Vermont Supreme Court, January 1944. Norman was employed in the law department of the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C. During this time, he was courting Dorothy Stoneman of Rockville, Conn., and they married Feb. 16, 1946. The couple moved to Bethel, Vt., and together opened law offices in the "Arnold Block," which his grandfather had built and where he had practiced law. Norman served as Bethel Town Clerk and town council for 43 years. He practiced law for 50-plus years on Bethel's Main Street. He served as Chairman for 25 years on the Republican town committee and occasionally Windsor County committee. In 1970, was a charter member of the American Blind Lawyers Assoc., serving as Treasurer and President. He was Past President and board member of the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, a charter member of the Bethel Rotary Club, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Gifford Medical Center and board member. He served as Governor of the Vermont Society of Mayflower Descendants, was a member of White River Masonic Lodge #90, Mt. Sinai Shriner's Temple, and a charter member of Green Mt. York Rite College. Norman and his family attended the United Church of Bethel, where he and Dorothy served the church in many capacities. He was most proud that he was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He enjoyed family genealogy, playing bagpipes, accordion and piano, doing crossword puzzles, world travel, and attending the Gaelic College in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Mr. Case was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 1989; and brother, Lt. John W. Case, mortally wounded in France during W.W.II. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Case Creed of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia; son, John W. Case and wife, Janice, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughters, Louise Case Lamphere and husband, Patrick, of Underhill Center, and Nancy Jane Nadeau and husband, Robert, of Essex Center; granddaughter, Meghan Lamphere Mathon and husband, Jake, of Williston, and their three children, Katherine, Margaret, and Thomas; granddaughter, Hilary Nadeau of Essex; grandsons, Zackary Nadeau of Essex, and Morgan Lamphere of Burlington; and cousin, Fred Gilman of Clarenceville, Quebec, and family. Norman enjoyed his years with Josephine Haikara sharing special days at her home and as they traveled together. Norman leaves his friends, caregivers, and special friend, Lois Sabin, at Gazebo Apartments, where he resided his last three years. A funeral service will be held at the United Church of Bethel on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception across the street. There are no calling hours. Louise, to your sister and brother as well; your father was such an inspiration to those with sight and especially those without. I shall miss his dry humor, cordials of Dry Sack, and martinis. He was one of a kind! Warmly, Evan Smith
