RALPH VARNEY YOUNG - JERICHO - Ralph Varney Young, of Jericho, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, following a day surrounded by his family and friends. He was 88 years old. Ralph was born on Dec. 30, 1925, in Starksboro, to the late Luthera and Russell Young. He played baseball at Bristol High School where he graduated in 1944. He later attended the Agricultural School at Randolph Technical Center. Ralph proudly served his country in the US Army in Italy during World War II, with his service ending in 1946. On April 11, 1948, he married Elsie Trudeau in Bristol. Together they shared a love for their family, friends, church, and the outdoors. Whether Ralph was feeding the birds, cutting flowers from his garden to share with others, spending time with family and close friends, or listening to his baseball games by the window; he appreciated the simple things in life. In his early years, he was an avid deer hunter. Later, he found just as much joy simply looking for them with loved ones. Ralph worked at UVM for many years and particularly enjoyed working in the poultry department. He continued to work until retiring from Curtis Lumber two years ago. His grandchildren also have fond memories of him selling Knapp Shoes at the Champlain Valley Fair. Ralph was known for his strong work ethic, faith, and for always putting others before himself. Ralph was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene, serving in multiple positions. He was also involved in several organizations helping those in need. He was a proud member of the VFW. Ralph is survived by his son, Mark Young; daughters, Nancy Young and Linda Wheel; grandchildren, Stephanie Walp (husband, Brian), Tonya Waldron (husband, Jeramiah), Anthony Wheel (wife, Natasha), and Matthew Wheel (wife, Katie); and great-grandchildren, Aaron and Joshua Walp, Kyla and Kovar Waldron, and Annalise Wheel. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Roy McDonald; sister, Doris Cousino; sister-in-law, Betty Ferris (husband, Joe); their families; and his wonderful friend, Dale VanLeuven. Ralph was predeceased by his wife, Elsie Trudeau, in 1997; and daughter, Elaine McDonald, in 1999. Ralph was a kind, gentle, strong, hard-working man who always brought joy and love to those around him. He valued life, always putting others and his country first. He was truly a Godly man. He will be deeply missed by many, especially his family and close friends. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at the Church of the Nazarene in Williston. A service honoring Ralph's life will follow at 11 a.m. Friends and family are welcome to stay for a reception at the church. A procession will begin at 1 p.m. leading to a military burial at Lincoln Cemetery in Lincoln. Please contact the BrownMcClay Funeral Home in Bristol for additional information.
