ROSE ALMA (DION) LAVIGNE - SOUTH BURLINGTON - Rose Alma (Dion) LaVigne of South Burlington, formerly of Williston and Hinesburg, died on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, in the Vermont Respite House. Rose was born in Burlington on Feb. 23, 1915. She was the oldest child of Joseph Dominique "Adelard" Dion and Rose Alma Giroux. Rose was educated in the Burlington public school system, before employment as a seamstress at the O.L. Hinds Mills in Burlington. In 1937, she married Francis LaVigne of Hinesburg and settled on the LaVigne Family Farm on LaVigne Hill, where she was a dedicated wife, mother, community supporter and volunteer at St. Jude's Church. A strong interest in retail sales led to a career at Rae's Suburban in South Burlington, Magrams: The Fashion Shop, and The Mayfair in Burlington. Rose always maintained a strong interest in fashion and continued this throughout her lifetime. Following retirement, Francis and Rose spent 20 winters at their Ocala, Fla., home, making new friends and renewing old acquaintances. Rose had a strong faith and a strong interest in her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis in 2000; daughter, Gloria Mahoney, and grandson, Patrick Gallagher, in 1993. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Armand, Lionel, Alfred, John and Michael Dion; and sisters, Yvonne Soutiere, and Germaine Roy. Survivors include her daughters, Joyce Gallagher (Francis) of West Falmouth, Mass., and Shirley Ahern (Richard) of Williston; and son, Norman (Carole) of Middlebury. Rose was the grandmother to nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Pauline (Richard) Bushey of Winooski; and brother, Norman (Mary) Dion of Burlington. The family wishes to acknowledge the caregivers and staff at Pillsbury Manor South for creating a loving and caring environment that enabled Rose to live with independence and style. She considered Pillsbury South to be her home and extended family for the past nine years. While at Pillsbury, Rose eagerly participated in the scheduled activities and especially enjoyed contributing countless hand-knitted blankets to the "Blankets for Babies" program at the FAHC's Intensive Care Unit. With gratitude, the family acknowledges the expert medical care given to Rose by Dr. Richard Tonino at GoodHealth Associates in Adult Medicine. His compassionate and professional care enabled Rose to lead a full and rich life in her later years. The medical and office staff at GoodHealth are recognized as well for their efforts in Rose's care over the years. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. A Funeral Mass and burial will be held privately for family.
