THERESA MARIE (DESVERGNES) MCLAUGHLIN - FRANKLIN / BURLINGTON - Theresa Marie (DesVergnes) McLaughlin, 88, of Burlington and Franklin, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 14, 2013, while surrounded by her family. Theresa finally joins the love of her life, Earle "Buzz" McLaughlin, former Chittenden County Sheriff and U.S. Marshal; her parents, Thomas DesVergnes and Helen (Gagnon) DesVergnes Turner; her two brothers, "Baby Louis," and PFC Marcel DesVergnes, who was killed in action during W.W.II; son-in-law, Richard Gorski; and others who predeceased her. Theresa was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, on July 14, 1924. She lived in Montgomery Center as a young child, and later lived at Saint Joesph's Orphanage in Burlington. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1941, and graduated from Boston's Wilfred Academy for Cosmetology. Her careers included bookkeeping at Vermont Warehouse Supply, hair styling, and matron/ financier/chef at Burlington's "220 Main Street's," Chittenden County Jail. Alongside her husband, she also served as Deputy Sheriff, and she most enjoyed many years working as a Chittenden County Superior Court Officer. Throughout Theresa's life, she had a passion for Thursday night bowling, meeting with The Catholic Daughters of America, beating anyone in a card game, boating, sunbathing, fishing, and traveling with her husband, friends, and children. She also enjoyed very much watching her 11 children raise their children. The last four years of her life included sunny afternoons lounging on the back deck of Hammond House, dining on fine cuisine prepared by her children, and always enjoying a good laugh with them. "Mama," "Nana," "Cousin Theresa," "Aunt Theresa," "Theresa" or "Terry," will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew her. Theresa is survived by her 11 children and their spouses, Thomas McLaughlin and wife, Karen (Hartigan), Mary Barry and husband, Robert, Kevin McLaughlin and wife, Valentina (Vacariu), Jane McLaughlin and husband, Robin Snyder, Timothy McLaughlin and partner, Theresa Wixson, Sheila McLaughlin-Gorski, Judith McLaughlin and husband, Robert Cormier, James McLaughlin and wife, Laura (Prentice), John McLaughlin and wife, Petra (Mix), Colleen McLaughlin, and Louise Strong and husband, Edward. She is also survived by her sister, Louise Lynch; along with 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A special thank you goes to Judy McLaughlin and Rob Cormier, Sheila McLaughlin-Gorski, and Kayce Gorski for giving so much of themselves during Mama's final years on earth. You took care of her, you watched over her, and for that we are all forever grateful. Visiting hours are Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m., at LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., Winooski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington. Interment will follow immediately at Resurrection Park in South Burlington. In lieu of flowers, Theresa requested any donations be sent to your local Hospice organization in honor of Kimberly, Brenda, and Jeanette who assisted in her care.
