Verna Gordon Obituary

Verna "Vee" E. Gordon

Age: 85 • Essex Junction

Verna "Vee" E. Gordon, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, May 21, 2017 in the Villa Rehab Center in St. Albans.

Verna was born November 27, 1931 in Waterbury, CT, the daughter of the late Henry and Helga Carlson.

Verna graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in MA, and Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, Boston, where she was a clinical teaching supervisor. She later earned a BA in English at UVM. Highlights of her career history include nursing, co-founder/co-editor of South Burlington's The Other Paper, Admissions Director at Trinity College, VT, volunteered for the League of Women Voters - serving for years as their president and most recently in Advocacy and Legislative Issues, including lobbying for civics education, campaign finance reform, and many other important issues. Verna was often seen at local Vermont schools before elections, volunteering to register voters. Because of her passion for civic education in the Vermont schools, and her extensive work with the league of women voters, she was invited twice to the White House to share her work with other activists and she was honored by Governor Douglas for this work. Verna loved reading, classical music, and doing the Sunday NY Times crossword puzzles.

She is survived by four children, William Gordon, Lewis Gordon, Liz Seoane and Terri Bair, their respective spouses, and eight grandchildren.

There will be a private burial service in Connecticut.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, VT Chapter, 300 Cornerstone Dr. Suite 128, Williston, VT 05495, or The Lupus Foundation, 57 S. Main St., Waterbury, VT 05676.

It's always hard to know what to say when someone passes. Sometimes, like today, it is harder than others.

Mrs. G was my best friend's mother, who became my friend. She was wise, good, sweet with a wicked sense of humor. The world is a sadder place without you, Mrs. G. And I am sadder too.

To Liz, Will, Louie, Terri and your assorted children, may you soon learn to think of your wonderful mom/grandmom with more smiles than tears.

With much love, Lease Evers Kingery.

Sincere condolences to the family. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure in your heart and it lives forever. May the wonderful treasures fill your hearts with love and bring you peace, Hosea 13:14.
