VIRGINIA MOREAU Obituary

VIRGINIA WEEKS MOREAU, MD LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Virginia Weeks Moreau, MD passed away in Fletcher Allen Health Care on May 11, 2012. She was born on March 9, 1928, to Harold Eastman Weeks and Virginia Travel Weeks, MD, in New York City. Ginger grew up in Brooklyn Heights, attended Brooklyn Friends School with her siblings; Willard, Sheldon and Elinor. Their family enjoyed the fine arts of both the Berkshires and New York City. Her love of nature began on the family farm near Sheffield, Mass., and continued throughout her travels and her life in the Adirondacks. Memorable childhood family vacations together included driving the AlCan highway during its opening and touring parts of Europe as a teenager. Her family included a long line of physicians. After completing Vassar College, Ginger graduated Cornell Medical School in 1952. Her medical internship was at Bellevue Hospital NYC, with a residency at New York Hospital. She was Chief Resident in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Bellevue Hospital. This was followed by a two year post-doctoral Teaching and Research Fellowship with Janet D. Travell, MD, her "Aunt Bobbie," in which they developed the field of musculoskeletal/myofascial pain and published several papers together. In 1957, Ginger moved to Lake Placid, N.Y., with her then husband, Dr. Herbert V.W. Bergamini. Her pediatric career in the north country of New York thrived for over 45 years. Her legacy includes developing both the Essex County "Well Baby Clinic" and the Mental Health Services programs, as well as being a physician for four different schools. Her loves and passions were her family, gardening, bird watching, natural history, world travel, cooking, children, social gatherings, education, fine dining, dogs, conservation, watercolor painting, photography and sports medicine. Ginger was a networker and touched the lives of so many people in very positive ways. Her boundless generosity and thoughtful caring for others are integral parts of the legacy she leaves behind. Ginger was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Moreau; and her brother, Willard T. Weeks. She will be dearly missed by her remaining family including, sister, Elinor Weeks Knapp; brother, Sheldon Weeks; daughter, Malinda Bergamini Chapman and husband, Glen, of Ticonderoga, N.Y.; sons, John and Grete Bergamini of Oslo, Norway, and Herbert and Erica Bergamini of Seattle, Wash.; stepchildren, Michael Bergamini, Donald and Dee Dee Moreau; nieces and nephews; and many grandchildren. A celebration of Ginger's remarkable life is planned for mid-morning on July 15, 2012, at John Brown's Farm in Lake Placid, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider making contributions to Adirondack Nature Conservancy, Elizabethtown, NY; St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center, Saranac Lake, NY; or The Wild Center, Tupper Lake, NY. A website was set up in her memory at: danieleweeks.com/VDW/ index.php/Main_Page.

Ginger was my best friend growing up. We lived very near each other on Brooklyn Heights, walked to and from Friends School together, played together, shared secrets. She was everything you could wish for in a best friend. She was maid of honor in my wedding, godmother of my oldest daughter. She went to Vassar with me. Although our lives took different paths, whenever we saw each other, we were immediately close again. Although Ginger's first wedding was a small, family-only affair, her mother told me the time of the ceremony and urged me to slip into the church so I would be there. I have a picture of the two of us together in 1999, in my room in the health center where I live-I am now 98. It gives me great joy to remember our times together. With love to all of Ginger´s family, Rosalind Hale Campbell

Ginger's contribution and presence will be missed in our book group from Ticonderoga, New York. She was so generous in sharing her food, her thoughts, and her presence with us for years. We wonder how she managed to keep up with all of her reading and loving activities with family and friends. We were blessed by the wonderful warmth and sparkle of her time with us.

Celebrating Ginger Weeks Moreau // Dr Virginia Davidson Weeks' life
Brown Farm, Lake Placid, New York, 15th of July, 2012
Dear Family and Friends:
We are keenly regretful that we cannot be with you this Sunday to celebrate Ginger's life. Having “known” her for 80+ years I wish I could be there to say “goodbye” again with all of you.
Our lives have evolved around house, lakes, and other places where we have grown and changed together. We overlapped at Brooklyn Friends School for eight years. When Ginger was at Vassar we would visit her. At Cornell Medical she made it possible for us to play squash on the rooftop tower courts. In our childhood and youth houses shaped us, ranging from the cool corner house where our paediatrician mother had her offices I the basement and Ginger's room was three floors up looking out over Squibb to the Brooklyn Bridge and on the other side to Manhattan and Governor's Island. Time was also spent together at the farms of out grandfather both in Westfield, New Jersey and more often at Merryfield Farm in Sheffield, Massachusetts. Weekends we went often to 12 East 64th Street and other times to Pelham. These were all formative places for the four siblings,
Long distant trips together began in 1948 when the four siblings with our Springer Spaniel and mother drove to Alaska to spend the summer in Fairbanks where our father was building an air base at Mile 26. Each of us found different things to do. Ginger worked on an archaeological project for the Alaska Museum, observing what came out of the permafrost where they were sluicing frozen overburden to be eventually processed for gold. They did find part of a baby mammoth. The summer of 1949 the three older siblings had the summer together were our base was with Ginger's friend from Vassar, Micheline Pean's family at 17 Blvd Le Febvre. They loaned us bikes and we took off first to England, Scotland, and Skye and back through Wales. I wasn't old enough for the workcamp at college pres du Le Puy, and went alone to Italy, arranging to meet Ginger at the end of Lac le Man at the Chateau du Chillon. In Geneva, Ginger would not sleep on a park bench in the middle of the city with me (I had camped there earlier), the Ile de Jean-Jaques Rousseau where the Rhone begins, so we went to a park with woods to the south in the city. In all our times together were supportive and enriching. Particularly the train ride back to Paris where we were thrown out of second class and the doors to third class were locked, and we were caught between the two carriages.
Looking back lakes were important in our lives from early on. From Merryfield Farm we mounted expeditions to Lake Garfield, Lake Buell and Twin Lakes to swim and fish. Here in the Adirondacks three lakes have made Ginger's life: Connery Pond, Tupper Lake and Turtle Lake. Water activities were central to two visits Ginger made to be with us starting over thirty years ago. First, was to Papua New Guinea (with Elinor and our mother too) to go diving as my buddy on a long trip in parts of Milne Bay on a small dive boat with the Bob and Dinah. At night we camped on different islands. We had two or three dives a day and Ginger quickly learned to look in at the reef and not out at the sharks that were far bigger than us.
Ginger and her husband joined us again for a week's holiday on Moody's Island, Namena, Fiji, where the Weeks' clan occupied all the chalets for divers on what pilots called Direction Island. We had learned of the Moodys and Namena through Ginger, as years before they had been driven out of Panama, where the Bergamini's used to holiday at a small island off the coast, (Pitatupo?).
Over many decades we have had good times with Ginger and family in Lake Placid and at Connery. Here is a picture of Kristina with her Dippy Egg at Connery 30 years ago! In the past decade I have been able to visit and stay with her a few times at Turtle Lake. Ginger was a good older sister, always concerned, supportive and interested. Once for 30 days, as part of a research project, she gave me small pox inoculations, with the hope that it might help my sinus condition. She was always optimistic. I give thanks for her life, what she has done with it, and what she has contributed to others. We are sorry we are not there with you on the 15th. Love, Sheldon

A great and generous friend with an admirable memory for things past, a contemporary grasp of this complicated world, a hearty appetite and a love of social situations and get-togethers. Even in her 80s, Ginger was an attractive woman with a good measure of gentlemen admirers. Her physical challenges never slowed her down. Like many others, I miss her.

Dr. Weeks, or Ginger, whom knew her could hardly separate the two in her later life too. Only knew her for five years and loved her dearly as the strongest spirited women doctor I wanted to know. Impressive to the end is my final image of this fine person. She gave me a reason to smile when meeting her professionally and friendly times . Thanks for giving her the independence she required to get through her final days. God will watch her now, Peace over her families, patients, friends.

Dear Malinda and Family.
I am so sorry Ginger became so ill. I am glad she is at peace now. I am glad you could all be with her. She was a force in her day. A real example of a woman doctor and very kind to her patients and colleagues. I step on her shoulders...for my interactions with her, not only as a Mom and GrandMom, but a mentor to the younger women doctors that knew her. With Love from The Family, Clare

I will always remember Ginger with fond memories. She was a true friend to my family and me, before, during and following the passing of my husband, former Saranac Lake school superintendent, Michael Nason. She offered us comfort and support during a very difficult time.

Ginger was a remarkable and accomplished lady. I am blessed to be able to call her my friend.

My deepest sympathy to Ginger's family.
