DR. WILLIAM H. FISHER - WOODBURY, Conn. - Dr. William H. Fisher, 80, of Woodbury, Conn., and Basin Harbor, Vt., passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born in Malden, Mass., Nov. 1, 1932, son of Dr. William H. Fisher and Jane (Grassie) Fisher. Dr. Fisher was a graduate of Amherst College and Tufts University Medical School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, Ensign, 1995 program in 1956. During summers, he was on active duty, serving on the orthopaedic service at the Chelsea Naval Hospital. The experience there convinced him to specialize in orthopaedic surgery. Following residency training and a six month position as instructor of anatomy at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, N.Y., he was accepted at New York Orthopaedic Hospital, part of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. On completion of his orthopaedic training there, he moved to Waterbury, Conn., where he practiced his specialty for 42 years. Dr. Fisher served as Chief of Orthopaedics at Waterbury Hospital for seven years. Also serving on both the Admissions Committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, he became Chairman of both committees. His interests were many. He was a private pilot for years, amassing 3,000-plus hours in a variety of aircraft, including gliders. He was a member of the Flying Physicians and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. There were many memorable family and business flying trips throughout the U.S., including destinations as far as Alaska. Through the years, he has enjoyed sailing, golf, tennis, gardening, boating, fishing, and hunting. In his retirement, he especially enjoyed singing tenor in the Waterbury Chorale and learning bird carving and woodworking. He cherished his family, leaving behind his wife of 55 years, Barbara (Lesser) Fisher; their three children and six grandchildren, William and Hilary Fisher and their children, Allie and Billy, of Peachtree City, Ga.; Nancy and David Muller and their children, Emily and Sarah, of Norwich, Vt.; and Wendy and Bob Beach and their children, Merle and Daniel of Basin Harbor, Vt. He also leaves sister, Carol Fisher of Frederick, Md. There will be a private family remembrance.
