LLOYD JAY HIER - SOUTH BURLINGTON - Lloyd Jay Hier, 69, of South Burlington, died on Feb. 9, 2014. Lloyd was a graduate of Otter Valley Union High School, and the University of Vermont where he played on the golf team. Lloyd was passionate about cards, darts and golf. He sat on the Board of Directors for the Burlington Country Club, and was the youngest president of the Vermont Golf Association. In 1976, he was the Vermont State Amateur Champion and was runner-up three times. He won the State Mixed Scotch Foursome and was the winner of four L.D. Pierce titles. He was the club champion multiple times at Burlington Country Club, Rocky Ridge and Proctor-Pittsford County Club. He was well known for his competitive nature, and was the first person to win both the State Cribbage Singles and Doubles tournament in the same year. He was an excellent dart player and played for many years on many winning teams for the Men's Dart Association. He will be remembered for his patience, steady hand, smooth putting swing and his tenacity. Lloyd served in the Vermont National Guard and was a member of the American Legion, the Eagles, Elks and the Ethan Allen Club. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing and held the state record for the largest catfish for three years. One of his greatest joys was spending time outdoors with his young grandson, Pauly. Lloyd is survived by his life partner, Paula Verrastro, and her family, Paul (Jennifer) Verrastro and their son, Pauly; and Robert (Crystal) Verrastro; brothers, Gary (Betty) Hier of Winooski, Bruce (Lynnia) Hier of Vergennes, and Curt Hier of Fair Haven; sisters, Gail (Paul) Ashley of Brandon, Sally (Mick) Lyons of Brisbane, Australia, Joyce Errecart of Shelburne, and Marsha Henry of Walkersville, Md.; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Ready South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington.
